Close Combat 5 Invasion Normandy Summer 1939

After a series of border clashes between the Japanese puppet state of Manchukuo ('Manchuria' in the west) and the Soviet-backed Mongolian People's Republic, a full scale conflict erupted. After two failed offensives by the joint Jap-Manchu elements in May and July, the Japanese-led forces dug-in on the eastern banks of the Halha (Khalkhin Gol) river, a few kilometers west of a small village called Nomonhan.

It hoped to gather strength and reinforcements in order to defeat the Soviets-Mongol forces on the west bank and continue the Empire's expansion into Mongolia. Such hopes were soon destroyed by a massive Soviet offensive on August 20th. It is this offensive operation that serves as the basis for the CC5 Khalkhin Gol mod (formerly known as Red Sun, Red Star).

The Soviet force (consisting of four infantry divisions, two tank brigades, two motorized recon (armored car) brigades, and two Mongolian cavalry divisions) was commanded by a then unknown general named Zhukov, soon to earn fame fighting the German aggressors in the west. The Japanese forces consisted of one newly formed 'green' infantry division, one veteran infantry division, two Manchurian cavalry divisions, and artillery and anti-tank elements 'loaned' from other divisions within the corps structure.

The offensive was executed almost flawlessly, yet the tenacious Japanese defenders held on, often performing dramatic last stands and choosing to fight to the death rather than be captured by the overwhelming Soviet forces. Zhukov achieved a quick, deep penetration of the Japanese flanks; within a week an entire Japanese division was encircled and eventually destroyed, losing 80-90% of all it's resources. A formal declaration to end hostilities was negotiated by mid-September. The Soviets had reclaimed the area of contention and mutual borders were officially recognized.

I chose this battle for a CC mod because it was pivotal in the formation of pre-WW2 strategic planning for both sides. The defeated Japanese eventually turned south, occupying and defeating many nations while continuing their brutal war against the Chinese, and eventually island-hopping their way to the surprise attack at Pearl Harbor. No longer fearing the imperial Japanese army posing a menace on it's eastern borders, the Soviets were able to turn their attention to developing situations in the west (ie Poland, Finland, and eventually Germany). Zhukov's classic encirclement of the Japanese forces in the Mongolian wasteland during the summer of 1939 is now regarded as one of the first instances of a highly mobile (ie motorized) force defeating a static enemy; truly one of the first 'blitzkriegs'.

Some in the CC community may question the purpose of such a mod and wonder how balanced the game can be if one side has historically crushed another (ie France 1940, Poland 1939, etc.). IMO, that is why playing such games can be a challenge; to play as the historically losing side to see if one can do what could not be accomplished historically. I have always been a fan of the 'obscure' mods, partly because I view them as an educational tool. If the data and units are represented as they were historically, then playing the game can be not only entertaining, but informative as well. I hope that people who play this mod experience both.

'Nomonhan - Japan against Russia, 1939', by Alvin Coox (Stanford, 1985) This is the most complete study of the events leading up to and including the scenario described above. It is very detailed, often describing platoon level actions. The only problem is that it is presented mainly from the Japanese perspective.

-The Soviet accounts of the conflict are unfortunately unavailable in English at this time, though there are several excellent websites, in addition to Russian military forums (in English) populated by knowledgeable students of Soviet military history.

Progress as of September 16th, 2004:

Data & research: 99%
GUI graphics: 99%
Sound: 100%
Music: 100%
Maps: None currently. Anyone willing to help should contact me immediately.
Vehicles & airplanes: 75%

If anyone is able to help with this project, my email address is provided below. I'm specifically looking for map designers. Im also hoping to find native Japanese speakers to create a new Jap voice file, but I'll use the old CC3 voices if need be.

I was wondering if you were planning on having any horse-mounted units in this? I've always wanted to see some calvary in CC, and I know both the Russains (especially the Mongols) and the Japanese used horses.

Just curious...
