Operation Aintree.
The village in the center is Overloon where a battle took place in October 1944. After Market Garden the Allies tried to widen the narrow corridor to Nijmegen and clear the area west of the river Meuse, also called "the Venlo bridgehead". First US 7th AD encountered the 107. Panzer Brigade of Kampfgruppe Walther and suffered heavy losses. After a week they were relieved by the British 3 ID and 6 Armoured Brigade. On 12 October the attack was recommenced and preceded by a barrage of 25.000 rounds that leveled the village almost completely. Heavy fighting ensues in and around the village. After Overloon is cleared the offensive continues towards Venray which is finally cleared on 18 October.
Casualties: Allied 1878 men, 40 tanks, Germans 600men and several tanks.
In 1946 the battle site became home to the first World War 2 museum in The Netherlands. It is well worth a vist. http://www.oorlogsmuseum.nl/

In August of 2004, Zappi, Homba, Bambam887, RedScorpion and MOOXE all pitched
in to create this Close Combat site. I would to thank all the people who have visited
and found this site to thier liking. I hope you had time to check out some
of the great Close Combat mods and our forums. I'd also like to thank
all the members of our volunteer staff that have helped over
the years, and all our users that contributed to this site!
