Yes it is unclear why they let the british and French escape in such numbers. It was litterally letting them, the Germans halted for days before capturing dunkirk.
But what makes you think that these soldiers would suddenly be able to stop a german advance without their heavy arms, while they were on the run for three weeks with their tanks and guns three months before. I know fighting on their own soil would give an impulse but still. When it would purely be a ground war, so no chanal in between the british would stand no chance.
What I do think is that it made some difference in the descision of Hitler to call off the operation.
