I think they're counted as either killed or not counted at all. I know that prisoners who die in the battle are not counted as prisoners, I've seen that a few times, but I've never bothered to control count the total number of dead and wounded in the after action report soldiers screen.
This happened recently in my CC5 LP! I should have checked :/ I imagine it would be KIA though.

I guess in first place they are counted as prisoners, that is what team leaders gets acts of bravery for. Same with vehicles no matter if You destroyed them later, once they're left("Clear out!"), the're counted as abandoned
