The Groesbeek Heights are the only 'high ground' in the Nijmegen area.  Securing the heights, and through it the eastern flank of the Allied drive towards Arnhem, is the primary mission of the U.S. 82nd Airborne Division.  The northern heights are especially critical, as they would give the enemy an excellent staging area for attacks toward the Maas-Waal canal or into southern Nijmegen.
The wooded Groesbeek Heights are the key terrain in this sector.  If we can push the Allies off the high ground, we can strike west towards the bridges over the Maas-Waal canal, or northwest towards Nijmegen.  Simply holding the heights is a serious threat to the entire Allied drive, and will force the enemy to attack you while you are in a strong defensive position.
