Yea, I am taking a return look at cc3. As always for ol' coots like me, I immediately run into possible program. I've loaded the patch for cc3, and have installed the westfront mod. Hadn't got into any play yet but when I took a look at the game and some of the units, and then "exited" a message pops up:

"cc3 exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for this inconvenience."

"error signature.

appname: cc3 exe appver 3.99.3.3001
mod version 3993. 3001
offset 000a22c2"

I don't have a clue what any of it means. I'm sure it's not a new issue; I just haven't taken the time to search it out. Any responses to what is happening I would appreciate.

thank you.

There are two kinds of officers on the tactical level. Those that look up. Those that look down.

CC series is my favorite WW2 game. My only complaint is it looks at battle "upwards" and does not not look "down."

And "down" is a critical part of battle.

I am 69 years old. I will become 70 years old in August this year. I joined the U.S. Army in 1956. I was 17 years old. I was in what came to be called "the last of the brown shoe army." (We were the last group to wear "Ike" jackets, brown shoes, and WW2 uniforms. We were the last to be supplied with WW2 equipment - M1 rifles, BARs, M2 (automotic) carbines, 30 cal MGs. I served in "occupied Germany" for 30 months, almost 3 years. I was a private when I arrived. I was a corporal when I left 30 months later, age 20.

It was the height of the Cold War. Germany was divided. The Enemy (Russiian forces} occupried East Germany. Emotions were tense. (A Russian MIG figther could be over our base in 15 minutes. So every month we had a practice alert. Our job was not to STOP a Russian attack - if such should occur - but to slow it down. Mainly by retreating west across the Rhine River, blowing the bridges we just crossed, and digging in and hanging on, hopefully, until re-inforcements from the US arrived.)

It was up close. Personal. And emotional.

Emotional. That is the factor I would like to call on knowledgable mod makers to consider, and a team of mod makers I would happily join.

Up. Or down. If your commanding officer "kisses" up, you hate him. If he "kisses" down, he was the "greatest officer" under which you served.
' Cause he was looking after YOU.

A "kiss-up" officer had one priority - to please his commanding officers above - at whatever cost - and promote his own advancement career.

A "kiss-down" officer (as appraised by his higher commanders) was one who saw his primary mission was to serve and protect his men. Those that make up the squads, those people he would come to know and identify with, and whose main concern was they not be led into harm's way unless...UNLESS...it was absolutely necessary.

I would love to see mod makers here (an expertise I don't have) concentrate on this second aspect of command control. Which is personalizing as much as possible individual men that make up a squad in CC games, and therefore, when I, the gamer (and therefore Company or Battalion Commander - which is the level as which CC games play) don't just reflexively order a squad to "attack Hill 16" with focus exclusively on the results ("Victory") but also on results/consequences to the men.

One way I try to personalize the individual soldiers is compile a name list composed of "names" that reflect people I know - childhood friends, army buddies, current friends, etc.

But I want to do more. And here is where I am seeking compatabile minds and more knowledge than I (which is naught) on how such a mod might be made, intensified.

After my 3 years army experience, at age 20, although I had qualified for OCS (Officer Candidate School), I turned down the opportunity to become a commissioned officer, and opted for my other love - becoming and being an artist. Which is what I am today. (Approaching - as I said above - age 70 this year. Gulp!)

Anyway...looking for some like-minded gamers and mod-makers who might approach CC games not just as who wins - but at what cost - and from GI Joe's perspective, it is the cost that counts.

More later.

I've downloaded a mod tool/program here called CCVIEW which is said to track unit histories through a campaign. Anyone here tried it?

Talking about single-man mods, it's mainly tracking the fates of individual soldiers that interest me - not micro-managing an individual soldier's actions. I am happy with the way the game handles the units in battle such as cowering, firing, retreating, etc. I want to see how Willie and Joe (and all their buddies) fare.

What little personalizing I have done is expand the list of USnames to a 1000 names or so, with about 100 of them being names I associate with a given individual, names ranging from childhood friends, life-long buddies and aquaintances, to media stars, political leaders, and, of course, names I associate specifically with WW2 - Machine Gun Kelly, Bill Mauldin, Ernie Pyle, Audie Murphy, etc and etc and etc.

At least when a GI gets a medal, gains experience, or even freaks out, I can say, "Wow! Danny Devito! You're gonna make headlines!" (grin. or groan. whichever the case might be.

Anyway...more later. Thanks for any and all commentaries.

Thanks, fellows, for the comments above.

Yes, I realize a "single-soldier" game reflects a more personal interest in the soldiers and how each fares, rather than in the larger tactical and stategic needs that concerns higher levels of command.

Not that I want to micro-manage the actions of each soldier - I like them following general orders and responding on their own as the CC games do very well. I'd just like to track the consequences to various individuals from battle to battle within a given campaign.

Is there a mod that allows setting up skills factors (intelligence, morale, experience, etc) for new unit soldiers, and then tracking their fates on the battles to come?

I have taken the list of names for soldiers and adding a couple hundred of names that I identify to a certain character (everyone to high school friends to my own army buddies plus dozens of known characters from Danny DeVito to Jerry Seinfeld to Bill Clinton - just see how they fare as they slug their way through muddy and wintery days of wold war 2. (grin)

All you CC5 mod makers out there, here's one I'd like to see. I'll throw out my thoughts. Curious about what is possible.

I'd like CC5 modified to a llteral squad level, where each unit represents an individual soldier. Where I could take a "force pool" of say 40 men (platoon size) and in a "campaign game" assign a squad of 10 men or so to perform on this map, another squad to another map sector in the game, etc.

Such a mod would focus on the individual soldier. So when I gave a "unit" orders, I would be dealing with "Willie" or "Joe", and each would have individual strengths and weaknesses. Willie might be stronger, but slower, so I give him the BAR. Joe is weaker in strength but more agile and experienced. I give him a carbine and make him the point man. Etc.

And then be able to track the individuals through a series of battles, see how they fare. Basically a mod where the purpose is not so much as to "win" a major battle, but, once assigned to "30 days on the line" only to survive.

Any thoughts? Possibilities?

Appreciate all who keep CC going. I haven't played it for a few years so playing even the basic game (that I'm having to relearn" is a fun game.
