I see one Close Combat community: CCS, CSO, CCJ, Ryan's, Matrix, definitely the guys who focus on CC II, maybe also Squad Assault.

yes, the guys who focus on CC - IMO still Atomic community...

I just hope Atomic are not about to flex commercial muscle and

indeed, but i do believe KZ made his conclusions.
actually, for me personally he was much more community/mods firendly than the whole S3T team...

Quote:
If that happened we would be left with Wacht am Rhein as the pinnacle of the series.

sry to dissapoint u, but compare WaR with CC5...

How long do you think it would take 75 programmers to solder one of the V for Victory series onto Close Combat in place of the stratmap?!

10 minutes.
1. Unininstall CC.
2. Install V for Victory in CC folder.
3. Enjoy playing a strategic game without having to bother commanding squads in every single battle.

I have always felt this was an "Atomic" community. From the jokes around the sites about Atomic I sense some animosity towards them. Is that the case? Atomic has always been our best and only chance for a modern Close Combat.

It is a grognards prerogative to, well, grumble.

AFAIK not every game in CC Series tries to be a poor strategic wargame and a stale tactical wargame at the same time Razz .

Seems to be a lot of faith in Atomic but their track record the last few years does not seem to warrant it.

Atomic distributed with three-sixty Pacific:
- V for Victory games were great but only the 1st game really was new and exciting
- World At War games were just enhanced V for Victory games and after the 1st title little changed

Atomic distributed with Microsoft:
- CC1 had lots of promise
- CC2 was a great game and improved on CC1
- CC3 was a great game and improved on CC2

Atomic with SSI:
- CC4 was okay and added things (strat layer the biggest) but also took a lot of things away (refit units, rest units, retreat, etc.)
- CC5 was good and fixed a lot of CC4 issues though it was buggy as hell and no proper patch was released.
Then Atomic disappeared for while....

Atomic:
- CCM for the military had improvements but was a trainer and not a game
- RTB was CC licensed to another company but with the CCM multiplayer features missing. Definitely a product to forget
- RP was an improved CC for the military that Atomic never finished
Then Atomic disappeared for while....

Atomic with Microsoft seemed to have the resources/time to really make changes with each game release. Does the new Atomic partner have the patience and resources to allow Atomic to make a war game with big changes compared to close combat?

What has Simtek/S3T with Matrix done;

- COI is CC3 with XP/Vista changes and a new campaign/maps
- CCMT is CCM with new data/maps
- WAR is an improved CC5 with bugs fixes and enhancements

COI/CCMT had limited changes and offered little to CC vets if you had CC3 and or CCM (through the marine gazette). WAR on the other hand is the first title that Simtek/S3T seemed to put some effort/resources into code changes. With two more re-releases planned which Simtek/S3T example from above will be followed???

Then supposedly comes CC6???

Will Simtek/S3T with Matrix have the resources to make a new CC instead of a re-release???

So basically S3T/Matrix made it compatible for Vista and fixed some bugs a decade after the release. Thats not really a track record that would indicate they could pull off the next CC.... the next CC should have a different engine!

Again...making CC compatible with new systems and new OS could have been done with a launcher front-end application...something along the line of Bernd's CC Starter.
And about moving on to the CC5 re-release and maybe then onto the next CC engine? S3T still need to address the CCWAR map coding errors 'scandal'. S3T have acknowledged the problem but have not released a new patch to fix the thing yet.
http://www.closecombatseries.net/CCS/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=6539
Maps are 70-80% of the CC gameplay after all.

Close Combat community indeed, but w/o Atomic there wouldn't be any CC community..

Quote:
What can I say!

you could try at least Wink.

TJ, with all due respect, but:

Quote:
- COI is CC3 with XP/Vista changes and a new campaign/maps

making it less historical and realistic than even vanilla CC3.
but who cares, CC3 is outdated Wink.

Quote:
- CCMT is CCM with new data/maps

i would not mention that as something good, if i were u.
that was actually such act of infamy for S3T after which big part of community realised that probably nothing good could be made by S3T as they hardly understand what they do.
but still there was tiny hope Smile.

Quote:
- WAR is an improved CC5 with bugs fixes and enhancements

fixing bugs and adding features is very cool but not when you make many more new bugs and ruin SAI.
and the last thing but not the least was that able, generous, "Im not KZ - I love modders" S3 team made most of the main CC modding tools absolete for the most "modfriendly CC release" in 1 day w/o giving something new in return (sry, Excel is not a modding tool).

Quote:

u know, i will open a secret to you, 99% of CC vets don't play vanilla versions of CC.

Quote:
WAR on the other hand is the first title that Simtek/S3T seemed to put some effort/resources into code changes.

and actually at first glance it seemed pretty cool Smile. And then we looked closer... that just put everything on the right place Smile.

probably puting "???" after each question shows that you don't believe in that either Wink.

Taking in account that CCM was practically unmoddable and had even worse data errors as CCMT, I would say that it's a huge improvement (like from something that is barely playable and stuck as it to something that can be made a bit more playable).

Atomic Games created Close Combat - The Best PC game I've ever seen.

Unfortunately they walked away from it leaving it only half finished... they get no pats on the back for that.

And we've been enjoying and playing (some of us religiously) these half finished CC games for the past 10+ years... Smile
And all those mods (total conversion is a more accurate term) and lasting community support for these half finished games...strange Very Happy

The support I've had from atomic these past 9 years ago has been exemplary

When Matrix stops flooding the universe with clones of a 10 year old game maybe some of us will put faith into them that they can actually make the next new CC. Untill then I think only Atomic has the interest for that.

Is it just me or does the next planned rereleases of CC5 (probably with mods attached)and CC2 seem tiresome? I am sure theres alot of work going into them, bug fixes, enhancements and all that stuff. Its great that maybe some mods will be released with them to. But come on already, its still the same game over and over. None of them will ever revive online. These projects are just little cash cows to line peoples pockets at Matrix. Matrix will make some money on it and it will be a success for them, end of story. Its too bad some of the brightest members of the community have been blinded by the opportunity to make money from thier hobby as they believed it was the last chance CC had to survive.

Mooxe

If you don't like them...., don't play them... why have a hobby site dedicated to something you're tired of?

Is it just so you can whine and moan about how good things used to be ?

mate, you're getting old... give up now, go find a hobby that excites you.

Tens of thousands are buying them, so the effort is worth it... I've now got a game that is improved and expanded over any preceding versions... for me, life's good!

The thing is...a lot of games (to this day) were released unfinished...and then supported with patches. We know that Atomic (and SSI) practically folded after releasing CC5...so how could they have supported the game (it's great that even the CC5 patch came out)?
At least CC5 even with all the bugs was still very playable, even with the crappy AI...CC5 still had H2H.
Look at CCWAR...even after 10 years of living with the CC5 bugs and unfinished features...S3T could not squash all the bugs...and in the process even introduced new glitches.

Most of us are just glad that the original makers of our fave wargame is still interested in picking up where they left off and hopefully develop the next CC.

When you stop using sales as a barometer for success, and start using the reason that put us where we are today, maybe then you will wake up and reshape the focus of S3T.

In August of 2004, Zappi, Homba, Bambam887, RedScorpion and MOOXE all pitched
in to create this Close Combat site. I would to thank all the people who have visited and
found this site to thier liking. I hope you had time to check out some of the great Close Combat
mods and our forums. I'd also like to thank all the members of our volunteer staff that have
helped over the years, and all our users that contributed to this site!
