Operation Rösselsprung 2 (Knights Leap) was a World War 2 iniative by the Germans, attempting to capture Partisan Leader Josip Broz Tito near Drvar, thereby disrupting leadership of the communist partisan movement in Bosnia.
Grman SS and paratroopers congregated outside the cave where Tito had made his headquarters and exchanged heavy gunfire resulting in numerous casualties on both sides. Interestingly Chetnik fighters (radical Serbs) under Draza Mihajlovic also flocked to the firefight in their own attempt to capture Tito. By the time German forces had reached the cave however, Tito had already slipped away from the action and escaped to the isle Lissa.
German casualties were 213 killed, 881 wounded, and 51 missing, with a total of about 6000 Partisan casualties.
do you maybe mean Operation " Rösselsprung 2 " and DRVAR in Bosnia[/list]
Yes. The attack by the German SS paratroopers seams rather well documented, but I haven't found much info on the other units trying to link up with paratroopers like the 376th Infantry Divison (Croat)"Tager", 1st Gebirgsjäger Divison, and the 7th SS Gebirgsjäger Divison "Prinz Eugen". Any help thier
Just for Information,
dont mistake, Rösselsprung 1 was a German Operation to destroy Allied Convoi PQ17 at the 02.July.1942, and thats the reason why the Balkan-Operation called Rösselsprung 2....
The beginn of the Operation Rösselsprung 2 was the 25.05.1944 with massive Airattack (440 bombard-missions)...It was a big surprise because it was Titos Birthday(52)....There was just a soldiers of a Officiers Scool, and escort platoon (ceta prateceg Bataljona) 310 Soldiers...After eleven Hours
3.Licka Brigada joint the battle...There also was a couple of british, us, and a soviet officers like Randolph Churchill (son of Winston Churchill)...
I spent time Peace Keeping in Drvar. When patrolling the city if you looked closely you'd see the plaques on walls dedicated to the men fighting the SS Paratroopers. Quite interesting stuff..... Drvar was pretty devastated after the Bosnian war. I have a bunch of pics if your interested.......
