A
complete replacement for the StuG III, the Jagdpanzer IV entered production
in December 1943. The main differences being an even lower silhouette and
increased frontal armor. Its manufacturer, Vomag, felt that the presence
of the Jagdpanzer IV on the battlefield was so important that they halted
their co-production of the Mark IV. By close of the war, 750 units had been
built, the first entering service in May 1944.
Not
to be confused with the Jagdpanther, the Jagdpanzer IV is more akin to its
predecessor, the StuG III. While the Jagdpanzer does have a massive gun,
a fixed turret makes it a sitting duck if it gets immobilized. It's best
to use these units in a flanking assault position. Keep in mind that the
battle cry of Germany was 'Blitzkrieg'. You shouldn't be content to merely
perch atop a hill as a battle rages on below.
