That's the only minor flaw in an otherwise cunning plan...

Had a go this evening.  Got one battle in before the Campaign (2110) crapped out.  Very flaky...

Don't suppose it is much of a priority for the tech's.  Understandable, it's hardly overwhelmed with players, but it would be a shame to see it go.  With little prospect of CC moving up a technical level, then this approach to a Strategic Layer is the best prospect I can see.  Although MMCCIII is still relatively crude, I still find the CCIV/V Strategic Layer rather uncompelling.  It works and that's fine.

If I win the Euromillions lottery, I'll finance CC6 myself!... Wink

Yes, that's one for the tech's...

I'll have another go later.

Keep up the good work! Smile

Is that the 'Windows' Server Box that keeps resetting or the MMCCIII Campaign(s)?

I just tried a battle on 2110.  By the time the battle had fininshed, the Campaign was down (no connection), and still that way.

Roger that.  MS JVM installs on Windows 7 (just plough on despite the warnings) and so far no pathology.  Still have UAC on.  MMCCIII seems to be working ok.  Set Propeties to run as Admin in XP Mode. Have seen the Campaigns on 2108 (all but over), and 2110.

The Version of MMCCIII I have is 1.04S.  Downloaded from the Matrix Games site.  Is that the most recent version?

Is Apiotrow still involved with MMCCIII?

How do you mean flaky?  Siezing up?  Dropping Clients?

PostForum: Close Combat Cross of Iron   Posted: Sun Feb 21, 2010 8:47 pm   Subject: Re: MMCC3 & Vista/Windows 7
Mmmm... As far as I know, the Sun Java does not have some (any?) of the classes Apiotrow used building MMCCIII which is why the MS JVM is needed.  The Sun Java I have installed is Version 6 Update 17 (build 1.6.0_17-b04).  Maybe I'll just go ahead and install the MS JVM despite the warning and see what happens.

Do you have MMCCIII Campaigns running at the moment?

Yo Schreck, how did you get round the MS JVM issue?

http://www.microsoft.com/About/Legal/EN/US/Interoperability/Java/Default.aspx

Or did you just install it anyway?  Can't speak for Vista but talking about Windows 7.  Same difference I would have thought?  When I launched the MS JVM installer, it gave me a warning about compatibility.  I could have continued regardless, but opted not to.

I am assuming that it means CC2 is now being looked on by the publishers as a non-money generating resource, and thus being distributed as freeware
Showing how careful you have to be of assumptions. The owners of Close Combat (All Versions), that is Destineer, has given no such mandate. No-one has permission to offer Close Combat for free Download. Anyone who does is in direct infringement of copyright, which does mean this site.

Quote:
I am wondering, does this mean the source code is available somehow too?
You would need a License from Destineer (if you could persuade them to) to get any Close Combat Source Code.

Your hosts justify making this available for Download in this way (taken from the Download entry):

"Disclaimer

This is the full version Close Combat 2: A Bridge Too Far.

It is offered here on http://www.closecombatseries.net/ solely for the greater good of the Close Combat community, only good intentions are being carried out in hosting this game. It is not being made available for any ulterior motives.

The motivation behind hosting this game is as follows;

1. The owner of this software no longer actively supports the game or its gaming community;
2. this software is over 9 years old;
3. it is not available in the intended brand new retail form as it came from its distributer; and
4. many potential gamers are being turned away due to lack of availability.

If you as an individual of the community or representitive of the copywrite holder have a problem or concern with this game being hosted I encourage you to email me at mooxe [at] closecombatseries [dot] net with your comments and it will be answered to promptly.

This software will be removed from this site under the following conditions;

1. The current copywrite holder issues an order to do so; and/or
2. a considerable amount of valid, substantiated reasons regarding any damage to the community being caused by this software being hosted here are heard from the Close Combat community.

I know some people will want to report this to anti-piracy companies for the purpose of shutting down this server. Remember before you act on your impulses or own personal motivations realize that this has been done with all good intentions."

One of the first phrases is most telling:

"It is offered here on http://www.closecombatseries.net/ solely for the greater good of the Close Combat community"

Brings up a whole can of worms...

Now the first question obviously is: is this good enough to allow for the abandoning of the principle of ownerships and rights, and the legal processes put in place to estabish and protect these rights?

The Site Hosts must believe that. Has any attempt been made to get Destineer's permission? and if so, what was the result?

I don't own it, so I have no personal agenda on this case, but I would urge you (all) to think about this carefully. I myself would certainly not be comfortable with doing it.

Having seen little discussion about this, I guess there is not so much interest in it, or are just happy to remain silent and accept it?

Where do you stand...?

We are crossing our fingers...

As Mooxe carefully (and quite rightly) qualifies the prospect for CC6 as being 'not carved in stone', never-the-less I do believe that the prospects are very good to get started in the near future.

Of course you are all very welcome at the CSO Forums despite it being 'a tad "overwelming" in a messy kind of way' Wink - don't panic! No offense taken Smile) to make your contributions to the Threads on this Subject. There is a Set in the General Forum (Poll, Dark Side, Ideas), and a Free Poll on the Main Site.

However, if you wanted to gather together here and do the same sort of thing, I for one would be very encouraged. I would certainly collate all feedback and statistics from you with our own to make a more comprehensive analysis. The only objective is to encourage a better prospect for CC6.

If we are fortunate enough to go ahead with CC6, I would like to see it have very strong Community involvement, and you are a strong part of the Community.

Anyways, well done all. Keep up the good work! I can't drop in here very consistently I am sorry to say (just too busy), but I will try and poke my nose in more often if I can Wink. Let me know if you think there is anything I can help with.

In August of 2004, Zappi, Homba, Bambam887, RedScorpion and MOOXE all pitched
in to create this Close Combat site. I would to thank all the people who have visited and
found this site to thier liking. I hope you had time to check out some of the great Close Combat
mods and our forums. I'd also like to thank all the members of our volunteer staff that have
helped over the years, and all our users that contributed to this site!
