That's a little depressing. I can't get any pleasure out of playing the computer so looks like if no one's playing the new games online there's no point. I still love CC5 though might just break it out again. Was shocked to see it selling on Amazon for $152!

I played CC religiously from 1997 through 2004 but when the new games stopped coming I moved on. I see all the original games have been remade and I am excited about jumping back in, and also getting my nephew interested as well. I have no idea which of the new releases to get and was hoping someone can steer me in the right direction. I loved CC2 but it looks like CC5 the Longest Day has the most activity at least judging by the forum here. I really hate playing the computer so online opponent availability would factor in to my decision on which game to get.

Thank!

I haven't been around the CC community for the past couple years, though I've been an avid CC maniac since CC1. Lots of good times at the TH site, where many of you may have remembered me as "folksywisdom". Anyway, most of the bugs I could stand, but after 5 years I think the random game crashing bug and the 0:00 crash bug finally compelled me to stop playing CC. Another factor in stopping was the number of good reliable campaign opponents dwindled online.

There has to be thousands of former players like me just waiting for some new life to be breathed into this game in order to justify a return. I think we need more than the same old game at this point. That should be in the form of a new CC, a CC6, with some graphic improvements and new features we've all been talking about for years. There has to be bellls and whistles added, without altering the essence of the game, to draw in new players. The steady influx of new players is essential to keeping CC alive.

I like Etcha-sketching. I have a few that I came up with to add to the mix:

Pull and Plug- the practice of cutting and running with a single team in your line in order to lull the enemy into a false sense that the ground is being forfitted. Enemy movement into the area is then targeted by ambushing units and a counterattack ensues.

Gangbanging - The use of an overwhelming force at the point of attack to sieze an objective.

Grand Finale - an event whereby a formidable battery of tanks unleashes an awesome display of firepower on an enemy bunker, and not only fails to destroy the AT gun deployed inside, but also falls victim to said AT gun.

Gophering - the practice, some say art, of popping out from behind buildings with tanks for a quick shot, then moving back into cover.

Turret Management - the difficult yet necessary orientation of the turret while Gophering, which involves moving the tank and turret to the desired direction, then moving forward while timing the swing of the turret to be aimed at your target at the moment of firing.

Smoke Spoofing - creating a smoke wall to deceive enemy into believing an attack is imminent.

Defensive Sprawl - the mistake of spreading out the defensive line too thin so as to make the individual units unable to support one another.

Death Star Defence/Offense - a formidable plan of defense or attack that has one mortal weakness if the enemy can find it and exploit it.

I just finished the first 2 turns in multiplayer as Russians. I've taken quite a pounding as can be expected, but still loving it. The sounds, maps and overall ambience is right on target. This mod is a work of art.

I have to agree with Mac that the small teams don't seem to bode well for balanced game play. Given the fact that the russians for the most part have low experienced/low morale troops to face off against the german teams with high experience/high moral, I am getting creamed in any head to head encounter. I do have lots of reserves to bring in, but the game is always 15 units versus 15 units, and all things being equal, I am getting driven back fairly quickly. Basically I can't compete with the german infantry, who are easily able to suppress my Russians in a firefight (both sides are playing without support as the game kept crashing whenever it was implemented, so that might be a factor).

I don't know how things will evolve as the days go on, so I can't really say for sure if this is a playability issue or not. These are just my initial thoughts. Maybe I will wear down the german machine enough so that 3 man teams become more of a factor. Either way, I've never had more fun getting destroyed in CC Smile

I consider Romance of the Three Kingdoms (I think version 3) my first wargame, back on the Sega Genesis, circa 1990. That game was so innovative, I think it would still be a great game today.

My first computer wargame Close Combat I the day it was released (I worked at a computer store and plucked the first copy out of the box)

Panzer General was a completely amazing game, and my first strategic level wargame. I tried to take it to the next level with East Front II, but found controlling all the minutia quite dull.

Hearts of Iron was a great game, but after playing it for a couple months I kept thinking of what it lacked. HOI needed a more complex economic/political aspect. Developers could have learned some things from Romance of the Three Kingdoms!
