PostForum: Close Combat 2: A Bridge Too Far   Posted: Mon Jul 17, 2023 12:48 am   Subject: In Memory of: PZLeader
Many of you CC2 vets will remember PZLeader from the competitive CC2 scene at at TournamentHouse and Case's.

PZLeader (Réal Paquette) died in 2021, at the age of 55. I learned from Boro who learned from Jihad, who been playing a CC2 Grand Campaign with PZLeader at some point which allowed him to learn the news. I meant to make a post here, but I think I had lost my PW at the time and Mooxe was away. Having discovered the CC discord, I am plugged in again and wanted to make this post.

I don't know how PZL died. Maybe covid, I don't know, but the impression I have was that it was an illness. It was a shock and an enduring saddness to hear that he is gone. He was a big sportsman, you can see from his obituary page (link below) how beloved he was of his various teammates, friends and family, as he was among the CC2 community as well. With an unwaveringly positive and humble attitude, he would praise you if you had won, and console you if you had lost. I counted him a close friend for a decade, played dozens, maybe scores, of games with him. He designed and ran multiple tournaments at T-House, and was a true pillar of that community. He was best known for his AARs which were instructive, entertaining, stylish, and comprehensive accounts of the game, detail for detail. For this, he became fittingly known as "the Bard" (a Shakespeare reference).

You can sample his AARs here, but scroll down to early 2004 - later reports were not archived by the Wayback Machine, which is a shame, because they became ever more elaborate as the years rolled on.

https://web.archive.org/web/20090112235312if_/http://www.tournamenthouse.com/CC2/2view.cgi?username=PZLeader

He was also a leading master of the CC2 Grand Campaign, and would write up elaborate campaign reports from the battles against his lucky opponents on the THforum.

I regret not staying in closer contact with him in the decade that followed CC2's decline. He joins polarizing Peiper (2003), and beloved Mousegrey (2008) among the CC2 departed that I know of. Peiper and Mouse were commemorated on T-House. If any of the CC2 diaspora come across this, do post a reply with any memory or remark you care to.

PZLeader's real life obituary:

Rest in peace my friend.

You must look at this:

Veterans/Old Guard page from then is really nice to look at for the names... each name evokes memories.

http://web.archive.org/web/20130125053050/http://www.tournamenthouse.com/CC2/TTopDogs.shtml

My games from the Jan. 2013 last archive:
http://web.archive.org/web/20090112235612if_/http://www.tournamenthouse.com:80/CC2/2view.cgi?username=Homba

Many of you will be able to find your game list in the same way. Many loss and victory reports still accessible. The older, the more likely.

but oddly stop at end of 2008... hmm... surely I played some after that. I must have to be on the standings in 2013, because you disappeared if you hadn't played in a couple of weeks... so that's more of the time machine oddness.

That's it from me. I never quite lost touch with Boro last of all, and emailed him about stumbling upon these things recently. Definitely deserve to be commemorated here. I was thrilled to see a few of your names posting as recently as this year. I hope yall stumble over this thread and get as big a kick as I did. I turned on notifications for this post so hopefully I'll see replies.

My best wishes to everyone.

More good stuff. Not sure about the timeline here. I thought TH was long gone by 2012-2013, as the first posts in this thread would indicate. But supposedly these are the crawl dates... dunno... time dilation... memory dilation.

Look at that last one: "CC2 Community - Planet Earth Division" ... there is no expletive that can punctuate that. I tried to come up with some. None of them add anything at all. Do you remember the heyday of that? Good times.

Got in the time machine at web.archive.org recently and traveled back to the remnants of T-House and thforums.

I recommend it.

You're probably both familiar with this site, but I don't think I had ever played around with it, and i had forgotten my intent to hunt around for tournamenthouse.com and thforums.com archived content. Low and behold, I was reminded of this archive just this week, and look what turns up.

PZL's battle reports

Boro's battle reports

These were in 2007. Lot of the newest AARs were not archived, but scroll down and the earlier ones all seem to be. I have not tried to look hard at stuff later than 2007.

Tons of nostaligia: posts and views of the old sites that got archived by this service back in the day. Even to the extent that you can click on the T and look at the old game reports. Now many of the newer ones aren't archived, but i think the older it is, the more likely it was crawled over by their archiving bot.

So almost every one of PZLs earlier posts are there. Some of the posts in THForms are accessible as well, but often not - i have not spent a lot of time at either of those two sites archieves yet, but already have seen there is a lot to see.

As you can see on the main view, when you arrive at web.archive.org and type in either Tournamenthouse.com or THforums, the sites were crawled over a long period of years. So I haven't been able to tell yet what is saved and what is not, but its interesting.

If you guys take any time looking at this, post a link to any gems you unearth. For example, i haven't even got into that part of THforums that we devoted to "the best of" AARs... there was some good stuff in there. Probably accessible to some extent in these archives. It really is like getting into a time machine.

How epic is this banner. And used to know who those dudes are. One of them was a long time player -- edit -- memory jogged, I believe it is: gs_weichs... why would I think this unless it was true!? -- the other was Boro's neighbor who had never played much, I believe. And on the left is an ancient computer, maybe a Commodore 64 or something, and I believe weichs photo-shopped in the view of Son Bridge... priceless.

I have been watching that new CC title on Steam (I think Gateway to Caen), waiting for a deep sale in vain for a while now. I am on Steam on a regular basis, play 4 v 4 L4D2 a bit, with some local friends, it's fun because it's completely a asymmetrical fight like CC, even if it is a FPS. It's fun to yak it up during the games on the mic, too bad we didn't use that during CC2, would've been fun. Space Hulk is my serious gaming these days, you can play it in turn based increments, so good for my more constrained (than the majority of the CC2 days) schedule (married with kids now - some or all of these were not true during CC2's heyday), it is very tense, asymmetric and planning-intensive in 1 v 1 versus (in all those ways like CC2 - my gold standard for all competitive gaming).

If you're on Steam, send me a friend request, same name there.

Yes I remembered. Check the 3.3 notes section, items 17 & 18 for the full rundown on the rehabilitation of the RGs.

I'm attempting to attacht the Readme, which you can also find in the Base file of the patch itself.

(edit - cant seem to figure out how to attach a file)

No, it isn't a 90mm AT gun. It's only a picture associated with that weapon number in the mod. Since the 90mm AT gun does not appear in the game, the 3.x patch team (I was the lead) used it as the slot for the Rifle Grenade, which as you've noted the Polish forces are heavily equipped with (I believe they have 3 RGs each, I don't recall). Any rifleman will have them - even for example the Polish Vickers support crew (because they have rifles). There are odd soldiers in some other (non-Polish) units that have them, but not in the concentrations that the Polish do.

A solid volley of RGs can really mess up a squad. That's exactly what happened to your Sturm squad.

All of this is included in the detailed and comprehensive Readme, which I wrote and updated throughout the 3.x patch series. Almost certain a note is in there about the picture of the 90mm gun appearing when the men load RGs. It is a bit disconcerting, but we never fixed that picture.

The Readme is worth looking at, especially regarding the purpose of the patch. Check it out. The 3.x patch has no actual bugs per say. It was relentlessly used in close to thousands of games by the intense PvP community that lasted long years around CC2.

I log in here after many years and see this post. What a blast from the past :)

Greetings all,

Homba

Hi all, T-House went down forever several years ago due to a corrupted file issues as we attempted to transition the entire site over to being hosted here at CCS. Please let this thread serve as a rally point and say hi if you are a T-House vet who wanders by.

Hello Homba,
Merry Christmas first of all!

Just Dwnld the ZIP, it contains a complete mod install. Klick on the CC2.exe inside this folder and I think it might ask for the CD (or should I say it is supposed to do so, I must make a check first ...) The HLP-management system is not modified and therefore not included. The ZIP gives you the ability to have a second CC2 folder on your disk, so it will not disturb your original install. And you will not need to download others ZIPs. Thanks to Mooxe for setting up the BIG ZIP!

No reports about LAN/TCP play of this mod available.

Mafi

Thanks! That is truely accessible!!!

Tell me, what is an advisable directory configuration?

I have my CC2 in the default directory: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\A Bridge Too Far

So I should create a new folder named ? (is the directory name important?), and does it need to be in the same directory path?

When I go to play Afrika, do I rename my original install directory for CC2 (for example "original_A Bridge Too Far", while Afrika runs in "A Bridge Too Far", and then switch directory names when I want to play the original install?

Thanks, I hope I was clear enough.

What does stand alone install mean? (fingers crossed!)

Can I just DL this and install anywhere and play? Does it have to have the cc2 disc to start up?

For multiplayer, what is required, both user just start up and join?

Thanks for your work on this Mafi.

Wow, what an end. We got one real goal from Italy - after Zidane hit a beautiful PK chip that brushed against the margin of error (or brushed perfection, whichever you prefer). The PK call was very questionable, but all was fair in the end, as a probably justified PK to France was ignored by the ref in the 2nd half. How did the Italian keeper stop that smashing header by Zidane in extra time!? That was the save of his life, tipped just over the bar.

France looked better in the 2nd half and extra time, but Italy hung in there and ended their PK curse (0-3 previously) and made their perfect 5 shots.

Zidane's headbutt! OMFG! It was like Greek Tradgedy. His last game, on the greatest stage, and he goes out like that!? Having read a lot of post-game coverage, I learn that he had done it before, and that his temper had always been an issue. Rumors so far: Materazzi called him a "terrorist" (Zidane is the child of Algerian immigrants to France and was always combative about racial remarks, having been harrassed a lot as a child apparently). On the other hand, Materazzi is known to be the best friend of an African player on his club team, and an easy-going liberal guy. Both he and Zidane dodged all press coverage after the match, and no teammate has enlightened us. The biggest item of interest remaining is "What did M say to provoke Z?" Bottom line is nothing can justify it, Z lost his head and blemished his legacy. It makes me very sad, even though I don't closely follow football. Seems to me any human being who watched the game and heard the coverage about how this was Zidane's last for France, would feel sad at that tragic end for him, his failure to overcome his own fatal flaw at the very last.

Congrats to Italy. I enjoyed the Cup a lot.

Not really rooting for either team but just wanting to see a great game, I'm pretty mad about the penalty kick the ref called in the first half. France never put the ball in the goal on their own, had to have a major assist from the ref. The game shouldve gone on to overtime, which would have been fitting. Really, Portugal looked the more dangerous throughout. And sadly wasted a few clear chances for a well deserved equalizer, especially the header off the rebound, and a few clear looks that went just over.

The penalty, much more egregious than the one that felled the Aussies. More like the ridiculous call against the US in the Ghana game out on the edge of the box.

The "foul" was out on the very edge of the box, the "fouled" player was not shooting or about to shoot, he had just tipped the ball on past the defender, way too far, an oncoming Portugese cleared it away as the ref whistled the foul - so even if there had been no contact, no way the Frenchman gets to that ball (same as the Aussie call - which is why I wouldnt have whistled it). The Port player had missed a swing at the ball and fell off balance, his other flailing foot kicked the French shin as he fell. Knowing the ball was too far gone, the Frenchman dove as he felt the contact.

Just a shame the players arent allowed to settle it on the field. I just hate it when a penalty kick is awarded when there was not a scoring chance prevented by the foul. And especially when it is just a "touch" foul. Maybe this one was marginal, as I argued the Aussie call was - though I disagreed with that call as well. But much less marginal, if marginal at all. Maybe the rule of "any foul in the box" regardless of severity or goal-scoring-chance, should get a PK. But it has never been, and is not now, enforced that way. Something egregious is normally the only thing that will draw a PK. I am sorry to see this game decided by a very weak call, rather than an honestly earned goal.

Barthez made some nice saves, as did the Portugese keeper. Im sorry C.Ronaldo did not get to the finals, to me he was the most dynamic player to watch in the tournament. Lightning quick, seemingly impossible to defend 1-on-1 (notice the French doubled him a lot), unselfish, great passes (the backheel setup), great free kick striker (when the header rebound was missed). He made Ronaldinho look pedestrian.

With Henry's dive that resulted in the goal against Spain, and this very questionable PK tonight, it is tempting to say the French have dived their way to the Final. A little blemished I think their achievement is. But that is soon forgotten. All the same I think I'll pull for Italy in the Final. But the way these two teams play defense, I will not be at all surprised with another 0-0 decided by shootout for this final.

Too late to change the size of the goal now I guess, but with all these 0-0 and 1-0 games, I find myself wishing that way back in the day the powers that were had decided to make the goal about 12" higher and 24" wider. Then we'd really see some back and forth scoring duels, and more importantly these stupid PK calls would lose their game-deciding importance.
