Sorry Michael I don't have anything to contribute in the way of aerial photos. All the books I have are ground level photos and most are not helpful with regard to map making. i.e. close-ups of units with little valuable background imagry.

Sorry Crying or Very sad

PostForum: Modding Workshop   Posted: Mon Nov 29, 2004 5:09 pm   Subject: Making mods
Since most of us try to learn from our mistakes in our daily lives what could be better than learning from someone elses mistakes eh?! Very Happy

In the spirit of that...

Have a plan from the beginning before doing ANYTHING. If we were writing a book about modding you could devote an entire chapter to this phase of modding. You say "How can I have a plan when I don't even know how to use the tools or know what needs to be done?". Well that's partially true but I can tell you from experience that you'll save yourself a LOT of time if you only have to do this stuff once rather than re-doing it because you have to update your info because you didn't have a plan.

Start from a broad, general viewpoint and work toward the minute, most specific details. You must be able to answer these questions with 100% specificity if you are doing a FULL BLOWN mod:

What war will your mod be about?
What theater of that war will your mod be about?
What area of that theater will your mod be about?
    Time period?
What areas were most important to understanding the battles that took place there?
Are there aerial photographs you can use for map making? If not collect tourist photos or ground level photos of towns and areas, contemporary or period.
What nations were involved in that theater?
What armies of those nations served in those theaters?
      Brigades?
      Battalions?
      Regiments?
      Companies?
      Divisons?
      Platoons?
What identification did they use? Shoulder patches? Badges? You'll need pictures of all of them.
      What ranks did they use?
What did those rank insignia look like?

How did they organize their armies?
      Squads?
      Men?

What type of equiment did they use? You must know down to the last detail.
      Quantity of ammunition?
      Number of grenades?
Number and type of weapons each man carried?
      Vehicles?
Number and type of weapons each vehicle had?
What were the armor ratings of those vehicles?
      Vehicle speed?
      Number of crew?
      Weapons the crew carried?

You must do this until every last detail is accurately understood.
Now it's not completely necessary to reinvent the wheel since a great deal of this information has been painstakenly researched by many of the mod makers before you and already exists. If you're lucky the information you seek will already exist within another mod and you can borrow that information for your mod. Most modders, like myself, are extremely flattered that someone would be interested in using their work and allow use of their mods work for other peoples mods without seeking permission but it's always good to ask before using that work.

When developing your plan you may choose to do a mod about a very specific thing rather than changing the entire game. Perhaps a mod that improves a specific aspect of someone elses work or introduces an element that existed in history but isn't represented in a specific mod or version of the game.

Regardless of your goal just attempt to understand as much as humanly possible about what you'd like to mod and you'll save yourself a great deal of time.

PostForum: Close Combat 5: Invasion Normandy   Posted: Thu Nov 11, 2004 5:25 pm   Subject: Afrika again
Hey guys sorry for the late reply. I've been scalp deep in map making which is the last thing to prevent us from releasing the mod. We've actually got many volunteers to help with map making so maybe we can shorten that process. It's not likely that we'll release before Christmas tho. The deadline I've given us is before Red Phoenix comes out so we're looking at February or March.

Also keep in mind that since this mod is focusing on the period from 1940-1941 (which is January of '41) the two principal sides are the British and Italians. No Germans yet. Next mod.

INSTALLING MAPS
STEP 1 - Visit http://www.close-combat-now.com/CC5Afrika.html

STEP 2 - Download ALL the maps on that page.

STEP 3 - Download the Terrain and Elements plugin. The link in text at the very top of the page. BE SURE TO ADD THE .pln EXTENSION TO THE FILE NAME WHEN SAVING OTHERWISE THE FILE WILL NOT WORK WHEN INSTALLING. The file you download should be called CC5Afrika.pln when you've finished downloading. For some reason my OS changes the extension back to .zip so it winds up not working with Plugin manager so I have to manually make sure the extension is correct which is .pln.

STEP 4 - Place the Terrain and Elements plugin file (that's CC5Afrika.pln) in the plugin folder within in the CC5 configuration manager program folder. Make sure you have the current version of configuration manager which is CfgV13.

STEP 5 - Open configuration manager and install the Terrain and Elements plugin. Close Config manager.

STEP 6 - Install the maps into your maps folder. You do this by double clicking each WinRAR self extracting exe that you downloaded and when prompted specify the C:/Program Files/SSI/Close Combat Invasion Normandy/Maps folder.

STEP 7 - Open CC5 and look for the Afrika 40-41 maps. YOU MUST NOT ATTEMPT TO PLAY A GRAND CAMPAIGN OR OPERATION! The btd files are not set up for play with the GC or ops so if you attempt to open a GC or ops the game WILL crash. SINGLE BATTLES ONLY!

If anyone has any problems please post here and I'll attempt to address them. Please be very detailed on the problem you are experiencing or I won't be able to help. Also please make sure you've followed the directions carefully.

Have fun! Very Happy Please let me know what you think of the maps once you've had a chance to play them.

I'd be interested in getting in touch with pzt_generaser cause I've got some ideas for several nam maps that I'm itching to do. I've got five excellent aerial photos of special forces camps that I'd like to make maps of and also have some ideas for LZ maps as well as a few river maps. Unfortunately lots of plans and very little time. Confused Also wanting to do OMG maps as well. Shocked Gotta get Afrika 4041 done first tho. Very Happy Anyway eraser get hold of me if you see this.

In August of 2004, Zappi, Homba, Bambam887, RedScorpion and MOOXE all pitched
in to create this Close Combat site. I would to thank all the people who have visited and
found this site to thier liking. I hope you had time to check out some of the great Close Combat
mods and our forums. I'd also like to thank all the members of our volunteer staff that have
helped over the years, and all our users that contributed to this site!
