The gold account chat rooms do not work that well. if the host of the chatroom loses connection, the chatroom closes and evicts everyone. The chat room hoster also cannot play a game while the room is hosted. Use the Bar & Grill chat room instead.

However, the only thing that sucks with that is when B&G fills up like it is now. 175 people appear to be the max.

There's no maximum.

I forgot to ask this, when I was trying to host the game I always got an error message saying that there was a problem with Microsoft Direct Play Helper and the program had to close. This prevented me from hosting any games, but I was able to join a game and play.

Any ideas on how to fix this?
Thanks
Ryan

This is happening to a small number of people, and at this point I have no idea why (and I can't reproduce the problem myself). It only seems to affect some of the older games with those people.

I don't have an explanation or fix yet, but I am looking into it.

Thanks! I fixed it. But now have "Invalid Selection" when browsing to the cc5.exe (TRSM mod). As 7A_Loki earlier wrote a modded exe should be no problem (or is it? @ Loki: What mod do you have installed?)

cheers

I forgot to come back to this post, but your CC5 should be detected now.

Sorry this took me so long to get back too, My friend and I still cannot get multiplay to work either through gamespy or via our IP addresses, I have tried freeing up my ports but he has to still figure that out, do you think that is the problem?

Thanks

Ryan, give GameRanger a try. It is designed to solve this kind of problem so you don't have to.

Yes, it's the mods that have been screwing things up.

I've made more changes that should deal with them.

Is there any way to play it with mods? I tried this today and it didn't work i.e it wouldn't start the game. I'm pretty sure that vanilla would work but if you can get the mods to be recognized then it would be invaluable to the CC community...or did I do something wrong in the setup process?

Which game was this for?

Interesting!
I managed to run it on one W2K-Laptop and got my account. One another W2K-Laptop the install says I need Flash, which is installed, before countinuing the installation. So basically it works, but don´t know what the other flash issue means. Maybe it´s just me and I´m numb.

any ideas?

diggin

Try installing the latest version of Flash. If it asks, make sure you install the Flash control for Internet Explorer. GameRanger doesn't use IE, but it does use the Flash Active X control.

does gameranger work with Win2000 as well? Or only XP?

It should work on Win2000. It just hasn't been tested much there.

Okay, I've released an update. GameRanger should no longer get confused between the demo and full CC5.exe files.

I'm not encouraging anything of the sort. I'm not familiar with the mods for CCV, so I figured it's possible some of them overwrite files.

Okay, here's what's happening. Both the demo and the full version have the same executable name "CC5.exe", so GameRanger does additional tests to distinguish them. It has currently been looking for the file CC5.icd, which should be in the same directory as CC5.exe for the full version. For the demo version, it expects that file to NOT be there.

ZAPPI4 and Panzermayer, do you have any idea why the CC5.icd file isn't there with your installs?

These are the changes I am going to make:

CCV
Require: Data\Campaign\Airborne Attack

CCV Demo
Require: Graphics\Message1.bmp
Require NOT: Data\Campaign\Airborne Attack

Anyone see a problem with using this criteria?

But i cant found any possibility to create a room for CCV except the demo.

Perhaps GameRanger didn't find your CCV exe. Go to Options.. under the Edit menu, and scroll through the game list to Close Combat: Invasion Normandy. If it says Not found, click Browse.. and select it manually.

Anyway, good thing to create this space.
If u can allow all CC avaiable to play there,
CCS will help you to promote it

Thank you.

It may take a little time to build up momentum, so don't be too discouraged at the start.

The best thing you can do is encourage others to try it, and perhaps idle with a CC game room open while you do other things. (Maybe turn off all GameRanger sounds except "Player join my room")

That way other newcomers will see you are interested in playing, and you'll hear when they join your room. Even if they leave before you come back, you can right-click their chat text (or the << Name has joined the room >> text) and view their profile or add them to your Friends List to catch up with them another time.

Yeah, sorry about that. I would have liked to support Win98 for a lot of the older games, but it just wasn't possible.

Hi all, just thought I'd let you know about a new multiplayer network I've created for playing the Close Combat series online called GameRanger. The actual list is:
- Close Combat I
- Close Combat I Demo
- Close Combat II: A Bridge Too Far
- Close Combat II: A Bridge Too Far Demo
- Close Combat III: The Russian Front
- Close Combat III: The Russian Front Demo
- Close Combat IV: Battle of the Bulge
- Close Combat IV: Battle of the Bulge Demo
- Close Combat V: Invasion Normandy
- Close Combat V: Invasion Normandy Demo
- Close Combat: Cross of Iron
- Close Combat: Modern Tactics

Basically, GameRanger makes it quick and easy to play your friends online.

It has full lobby support for over 500 different games and demos (including the Close Combat series, of course), without the hassles and headaches that usually happen with network connections (eg. routers & firewalls).

Based on the threads in this forum, it looks like quite a few people have been having problems.

I'm really excited to be releasing it, and hope it helps boost the CCS community by allowing people to play that were unable to until now due to problems with opening ports, etc. The more barriers that can be removed, the more likely the community will stay strong, as new users won't be put off. You should find this far simpler than the other cumbersome methods you have been forced to use.

You can download it at www.GameRanger.com

In August of 2004, Zappi, Homba, Bambam887, RedScorpion and MOOXE all pitched
in to create this Close Combat site. I would to thank all the people who have visited and
found this site to thier liking. I hope you had time to check out some of the great Close Combat
mods and our forums. I'd also like to thank all the members of our volunteer staff that have
helped over the years, and all our users that contributed to this site!
