An Army at Dawn by Rick Atkinson

Covers the US army's North African campaign in WWII from Operation Torch to the capture of Tunis. Very insightful read about some of the early difficulties experienced by American troops and commanders when they were green and untested in battle.

Almost finished with it and soon to start on The Day of Battle by the same author. Covers the Sicilian and Italian campaigns.

It's refreshing to hear opinions from outside the US about this. I'll admit my own outlook on this is cynical, but it seems that most here in America adhere to a "follow the crowd" mentality on nearly every issue rather than thinking for themselves. This is reinforced daily by the extremist pundits and corporate media outlets. Some have allowed themselves to be convinced that socialized medicine equates to socialism which might as well be communism in their eyes.

They believe they will have to wait in long lines to see a doctor or wait months for an operation. The irony is, most of them don't realize that their expensive private insurance is very likely to find a reason to deny their legitimate claim in order to conserve profits for the company. I know this after being involved in the health insurance business several years ago. The movie Sicko also provides some accurate examples of this.

I support efforts to reform healthcare in the US. I can't think of any country that has it where the citizens would willingly go back to paying for it out of their own pockets. The special interests here make this a very difficult proposition. It's ironic that the "freest" people in the world have become so dumbed down and allow themselves to be led by the nose so easily.

Hello CC'rs

I haven't played in several years but used to play a lot. I played mostly campaigns but also ladder games too. I have what are probably some annoying questions that have been asked too many times before.  Wink

Right now I just have standard, unmodded CC5 on the comp. I'll be downloading the patch shortly. So what is the best mod to have installed for getting a hth game? I'm not picky about which mods to play I just want to get in some playing time.

Where is everyone playing these days?

Are these new versions of the game(TLD, etc.) worth getting and are there more people playing them than original CC5?

The only trouble I am having with CC5 on Vista is that the scroll speed on maps is unbelievably fast. I changed it to Slow but it's still really fast. Any fix for that? Any other issues I need to know about concerning the game or mods when using Vista?

Sorry for all these newb questions.  Razz

Hope to see some of you in game soon
