By all means. I picked it up and began reading... to be honest, I wasn't impressed within the first twenty or so pages. As I had gotten two books, (the Thin Red Line and the Beauty and the Sorrow) I started and finished the other one. Great narrative story of WW1 told by all sides, from the journals and diaries of twenty different people (Red Cross nurses all the way to Turkish Mercenary who experienced the Armernian genocide). The way its written, it reads more like a story than just a bunch of random entries.

Anyways, after I finished the Beauty and the Sorrow I picked up the Thin Red Line and could not put it down. The way its written is amazing. Jones seamlessly shifts from character to character, often giving you several points of view on the same event without becoming redundant.

I cannot reccomend it enough.

PS: Just dusted off my copy of CCIII and am currently searching out the PAC mod for CCIII.

Holy cow, my favorite War Movie (and top 3 movie of all time) is proof positive that "the book is better than the movie". I'm absolutely loving it!

It makes me want to play the "Thin Red Line" mod (a small submod/scenario-package based on the CC2 Pac Mod) again.

If I only had a little more time... I'd love to create a version of the mod that follows the events as they occur in the book.

- Kind of off topic if you haven't read the book/seen the movie: Although they don't have medics per se, Combat Mission simulates stretcher-bearers with a game concept called buddy aid. Move a soldier near a wounded/dead mate; he will "get him help" (and improve your "score" at the end of the battle). Its too bad that the game doesn't model psychological effects to the extent of Close Combat (morale drops for dead/incapacitated squad/platoon/company mates), imagine there was a system like scavenging purely for "medic" activity in CC, you could really keep an assault going.

I have recently acquired Peter Fisla's amazing Close Combat 1 Tools...

included are:
XBattle - Create your own scenarios
XMapMaker- Create your own maps
XLos- create a LOS file for your map
XCampaign- Check the OOB for your current campaign

I am currently attempting to contact Mooxe to find out if he can host these files here at CloseCombatSeries.net

Very interesting... I am attempting to run your mod, Operation Market Garden... but I was running Real Para immediately before I (thought I) scrubbed it and installed Operation Market Garden.

first of all, thank you for your creation!

Anyways, the Pz IV looks like the B-2, at any rate, its a new graphic file (not anything from the original ABTF... again, leading me to believe I screwed something up in the installation)

I wasn't sure if anyone else was having issues with the Plugin file...

Is there any place I can find a non plugin version of your creation? If not, that's fine, I'll just get it running on a different rig.

PostForum: Close Combat 2: A Bridge Too Far   Posted: Fri Sep 18, 2015 6:47 pm   Subject: Operation Market Garden Mod
Installed the Op Market Garden mod. My plugin manager (CCII Config) was unable to load it as a plugin, so I had to manually install. I feel like I've had this error before with this mod... but who knows, its been years since I last booted up CC2.

Anyways, I'm having a few small issues with the mod, and try as I might, I'm not able to edit the TGA files with the CC2 tools... (That's a whole other barrel of monkeys).

Issue 1- Flame Hetzer is showing as a german halftrack. Not a game breaker by any means, but it definitely affects the immersion and can be a little confusing when manually aiming my AT guns at it.

Issue 2- Mark IVs are showing up as B-2 740 (flame). I haven't been able to locate the captured French tanks within the game yet...

This last issue is kind of aggravating, and signals a bigger issue (at least to me).

I plan on doing a complete reinstall and probably running real-para.

If anyone has come up with any of these issues (plugin file not working, tank graphics not matching up, possible missing B-2s) and found a work around, I'd be interesting in hearing about it. As I understand it, OP Market is the newer of the two mods, and well, anything to spice up my favorite CC.

Hahaha... Comparing the masterpiece that is CC2 to Matrix's rehashed bulls**t. I don't know whats funnier, you checking wikipedia to find out how Market Garden ended or STWA still having entire conversations with himself about his wacky map creations. Oh how I wish someone would do an overhaul of this game... someone from the community that is.

Starfox, get over yourself already. And please don't come back at me with some disjointed nonsense. The community is the game. Furthermore, what's got you so certain that this game is going to be different than any other rehashed version of our beloved Close Combat? You're past fan-boi, you're just delusional. Makes me wonder if you've got a stake in this whole mess. I hope TBF is great, but I'm not... I'm not going to do this anymore. Make a mod and be out.

Is that why the game looks so dumbed down?

Am I wrong to think that the Ipad is a terrible interface to be working towards?

I'm Close Combat fan from long time, but also I liked to play World of Tanks, and I noticed in that second game Grille is an artillery, so why I can't use it in this way in Close Combat? I think it was purpose to stay hidden behind something and shot in the sky as mortar.

Hey bud. I also play WOT, and I understand what you are asking. No, it cannot be used in indirect fire mode. The concept is that because its truly a long range gun, at least within the confines of Close Combat, it wouldn't even meet it's minimum firing range at the edge of the map.

So its only used as a direct fire weapon. World of Tanks, as we both know, is a little more towards the arcade style, so it only makes sense to use it as indirect within that game.

The other guys are explaining how you can mod the game to allow it to fire without having to see its target. Oh and Dima is making this whole discussion pointless, which I'll also have to look into because he didn't provide links!! ; )

That being said, I'm definitely going to check out what Firefox and Mafi were talking about. Hey Mafi, any more plans for CC2??????

PostForum: Close Combat Gateway to Caen   Posted: Sat Jul 05, 2014 8:09 pm   Subject: Re: 3in allied mortar's taking out MK4 tanks?
I've been unfortunate enough to play the same map (Cheux) against the same player (He shall remain nameless) several times in the same setup.

(Has this happened to you?)

He runs approximately 7-9 Panthers against my standard British battlegroup.

----

I've found that a great tactic to use is a mortar (3in) or if I *have them, an off map mortar battery, firing in the middle of a gaggle of Panthers and going for immobilization.

-I don't advocate using a battery against AFVs unless its a one-off battle, it obviously doesn't always work and the assets could be better used elsewhere.

-That being said, it's never a great idea to use a battery against AFVs if the player also has infantry units knocking about!

Does anyone remember CC1? They still use the original sound file to this day in GTC. However, when they say "In position", in GTC, it just means they've moved to their objective. In the original CC, when you heard something like that, it was because your men had been in place for a while and were itching to get into a fight, redeploy, what have you. I think they even had a sound cue that went, "Waiting for orders!"

Well after all that crap, I took a gamble and grabbed GTC. It is the best CC since CC2. Fighting for Cheux has been a nightmare, although I have whittled down the Heavy tank group fairly well with great tactics and just the slightest bit of luck.  Wink  Followed Nomada's advice on a different forum and managed to swap out PITF's soldiers textures with GTC's and the dead bodies are back. Its just so much easier to follow the battle, although I am very good at listening for the sound of bullets passing through flesh.

Oh and I am not a psychopath, but not having blood to indicate when a member of my squad is killed or incapacitated is beyond frustrating. It goes back to the whole tracers argument, I need some sort of quasi-realistic abstraction to help me know whats going on around me. I really hope they add it as an option in a patch.

Recently played both of the new releases. No direct Ip option is a drag right off the bat, but if you reread what I wrote I compared it favorably to the Microsoft Gaming Zone.

Actually, Firefox, I've played every single Close Combat game released (including CCM and [something else]).

My first post was rather nasty, but I was indeed surprised. On MAtrix's forums, as of last night, they still referred to Panzers in the Fog as the last game of the old engine. It is what it is.

We've always had night battles, at least since TLD, or was that CCV?

I love Close Combat, don't get me wrong. I know I've spoken with you on here ages ago, but I can't remember what about.

Anyways, I can see the differences. Its just a crying shame that Matrix continues to pump these games out. I agree that the latest incarnations have offered more in the way of "features". I actually relish the fact that I can still play new Close Combat games on my ancient computer.

To sum up my feelings, I'll use your quote:

Nomada_Firefox wrote (View Post):

-The game can be modded easily and it has not the older limits.

You are exactly correct. I made a mock up of my college town with help from Peter Fisula all the way back in Close Combat 1. I've played everything from the landings at Crete to Iwo Jima and back again. I just don't think new "features" every year or so justifies another $40-60 for what basically amounts to a "mod."

I don't want my last message to be rude, so I'll just say this: I am so happy that Slitherine has taken over the CC franchise, only good things can happen. I'm just a little upset with Matrix; one or two good releases won't make me any less apprehensive about say, The Bloody First.

I think the right honorable Mooxe was correct when he stated, in some other thread on perhaps some other forum, that one of the problems with all the re-releases (mods in effect) was their discontinuity. Take the Modern Tactics/Marine CCs, where are the 3v3 battles? It looks like they have finally created a dedicated lobby that could perhaps rival Microsoft's Zone, (holy crap that was a long time ago), but I wouldn't know, I still play on Game Ranger. Oh well..

I just was surprised that they released another game before TBF. Its disappointing that despite Sliverine (or whatever the hell they are called) 's involvement, Matrix is still up to its crooked old tricks.

One last power gripe.... Would it kill them to create a little more synergy between the "strategic" and tactical levels? The size of the units involved doesn't exactly translate well into what we see in the individual battles.

Well I know I mentioned Combat Mission above, but Close Combat is my first love. And that rhymed.
The end.
