Great minds think alike!
In terms of preference, I'm leaning towards Stalingrad. However, what is the difference between WAW: America Invades and V4V: Utah?
I haven't played any of the World at War series. I started Operation Crusader game many years ago to have look, but never played more than a couple of turns. I only remember how huge the map was and the different nations. V for Victory: Velikiye Luki is the only battle I have ever actually played substantially.
We'll both be approaching the battles with no knowledge, which is the best fog of war we can ask for.
|
America Invades adds Omaha Beach to Utah Beach so covers both of the American beaches in one campaign game. As I'll be playing a Utah Beach campaign in my upcoming Let's Play I'd rather avoid America Invades for now.
I know a little about Stalingrad and it's a very bloody and interesting battle. It could be very interesting to see how the balance of power swings from the Germans to the Russians. Let's figure out the details by PM. |

Stalingrad was the other one, and it looks to have PBEM.
|
Yes - I mention in the Atomic Games video that PBEM was only officially supported in the World at War series.
|
Are you interested in doing a PBEM?
|
I would love to, although I have NEVER played any of those particular games and so I'm sure I would play like a noob. So, if you don't mind that let's go for it. A few questions:
* Would be cool if we could do this as a Let's Play with us both recording our respective sessions. Do you have a YouTube channel? Are you up for that? * Which game would you prefer? * Do you have any experience with the games? |

I would just add that all three of the World at War games have PBEM. The games are:
Operation Crusader Stalingrad D-Day America Invades
There was also a fourth planned, possibly around the Battle of the Bulge, but as far as I know it never got past the early discussion stage. |

Nevermind. I found them. Here is Operation Crusader: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijIEkA1NmdI
|
They were part of the "World at War" series and used the same engine as the V for Victory games but with a rejigged user interface. I actually mention them right at the beginning of my Atomic Games video. They were also developed by Atomic Games after they ended their relationship with Three-Sixty Pacific and joined up with Avalon Hill.
While my next Atomic Games video will cover the remaining V for Victory games, the third video in the series will cover the World at War games so look out for these later this month. |

Also, how do I get larger screen resolution? I went into the config file and changed fullresolution to different sizes but it keeps displaying at original size. I also played around with fullscreen and windowresolution, but they all keep coming up the same. Am I missing something?
|
Here's my DosBox config for your info. I set the screen resolution to 0x0 which sets DosBox to the native resolution of the monitor. This config starts off in fullscreen and always scales to fill my screen height as you will have seen in my video. This may also be affected by the scaling set in your video drivier. Mine is an NVidia card with the driver scaling mode set to "Aspect ratio" and for scaling to be performed on the "Display".
Also, in the CPU section of the config, I set "cycles=fixed 15000" as this works best on my PC. I found that having cycles set to Auto led to V4V running far too slow. Set it to fixed and adjust the value until you get the game playing at a decent speed. Don't make the speed too high as scrolling the map in small increments becomes impossible as you end up always just jumping straight to the edge of the map instead of moving bit by bit.
Code:

Thank you - I really appreciate the feedback. I must admit that I have a lot of self doubt making these videos, I'm kind of an introvert and so it's not natural for me to do this. That said, I do enjoy making them and want to push myself to do something interesting and productive now that I'm retired. So, thanks for the advice - I will keep on doing what I'm doing |

Too bad you can not get these to work on new OS's without having to use emulators.
|
While DosBox can be awkward to setup in its raw form, I use the D-Fend Reloaded frontend and this makes setup of the games a breeze. After only a couple of minor tweaks away from default DosBox settings all of the games run perfectly.
|
I've been trying to get this running on VirtualBox, but I need a copy of Windows 95 to make it work. I'm having trouble finding a free downlaod Win 95.
|
To play V4V and WaW you just need DosBox, although I'm guessing that you're wanting to use VirtualBox for far more than just playing these games. I have no experience with VirtualBox but from their website I don't even see Win 95 as being supported and Win 98 runs slow. I still have my old Win 98 floppy disks. |

Thanks for watching guys. These are superb games that to my mind stand up almost as well today as when they were first released.
I must say that I'm quite excited to be starting the Let's Play of Utah Beach very soon. |

I'm pleased to announce that I have just published the first video in a series covering the incredible computer wargaming legacy left by Atomic Games. This first video covers the creation of Atomic Games in 1989 and the development and release of their first game in the V for Victory series, D-Day : Utah Beach.
I spent a lot of time researching this video and believe there may well be some things in this video that you didn't know before.
I hope that you enjoy this video and that you find it informative. I'm always trying to improve and so please let me know what you think either in the video comments section or by replying to this post.

Mooxe has found the root cause of the problem as discussed here: http://www.closecombatseries.net/CCS/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=10424
My fix is now no longer applicable. |

Have just finished testing with Mooxe and can confirm that he is indeed absolutely correct with what the problem was. My hack did indeed just bypass the problem and did not address the root cause. All praise Mooxe :)
So, please delete any copies of the hacked cc2.exe that I sent to you - it is most definitely not needed. Best thing to do is to completely uninstall CC2 and then reinstall. Then patch to 2.0b patch in compatibility mode. I believe Mooxe plans on updating his CC2 install instructions accordingly. |

I don't think you should upload the fix without the permission of the creator, he asked me specifically not to share it before he had tested it enough.
|
Is that so? Hmmm... I'll remove the links for now then.
|
Yeah - sorry TIK - I probably didn't tell you that. Got some more testing to do this week and then whatever the way forward is will be posted by the end of the week. In the meantime please remove the download. Thanks. |

Hey, can you share your solution? I'm available this weekend to test it. Also, are you not using the 3.4 patch?
|
I'll send you an email with the patch and we can discuss when we're both available for some testing.
I have been testing both without and with the 3.4 mod. Note that my patch updates the actual game executable (based on the 2.0b executable) while the 3.4 mod ONLY changes the game data files. So, they are mutually exclusive and therefore one does not affect the other. |

I probably can only help a little and look for others with more experience with Close Combat multiplayer, but I can comment on the following:
If your computer is behind a router then it should only be necessary for you to open the ports on your router and you should not need to use a port forwarding service.
When opening the ports on your router, the IP should be the internal IP of the computer you are using, typically of the form 192.168.1.###. Set the internal and external port values/ranges to be the same.
I have so far only played Close Combat 2 via multiplayer and so do not know about the newer games, but when I start a game via GameRanger I too get the message about "Port-restricted Cone NAT router". I think that so long as you have manually opened the correct ports on your router this message is irrelevant and can be ignored.
BTW - for Close Combat 2 the port that needs to be opened is TCP 1945 and not the 2300-2400 stated.
Hope this helps. |

I believe that I have a solution for this and have successfully tested with two other players. Really would like to do a little more testing with one or two others before I roll the fix out (VERY simple fix by the way). If you'd like to volunteer for testing them please reply here or PM me. All you need to do is to have CC2 installed and patched to 2.0b. No other mods initially. |
