PostForum: Close Combat 5: Invasion Normandy   Posted: Sun Jan 16, 2011 7:47 pm   Subject: German Half Track mix up
I seem to have forgotten in the mists of time..sic.
Why this was, can someone remind me.

The 192nd / 21 Panzer has half tracks listed as the sdkfz 250 1 / mg42

This appears to be a German funny. Is it a French tank under a different designation, as it comes with a turret
Or a modified armoured vehicle which was assembled from captured stocks of vehicles and weapons.
Or simply a mix up with a vehicle listed under the wrong title in the game

It is quite a tough Hombre. More of an armoured car. But suicidal to match against Allied armour.

Confused? well so am I.

Thanks

How do you download your mods. Does your copy of CC have to be on the hardrive. And if 'yes' , how do you do that from disc.

thanks

Sherman 105mm. What a bang it makes. And the super slow reload time. Makes for interest in tank vs tank duels.

All mortar carriers , 8cm and 81mm. Portable firepower , I love them deeply.

Stuart, mobile pill box. fast reload on the 37mm is awesomeX2

M20 50cal. Cool armoured calvary + bazooka comes in handy for ambush.

Keep Pushing !

Hi

I have being playing CC for many years. With no mods or campaigns at all.
And have become pretty awesome against all A1 known tactics. What tactics they have that is !!??.

I want to ask a question. What is the difference when your opponet is a human and not the A1.
The tactics and how games evolve in a campaign mode is of interest.

All comments appreciated.

Also what is the simplest mod to add and play on an elderley computer ( mine ). For CC5 Normady.

I play CC345 with no maps or significant patches. As my laptop does not have a decent graphics card.

As I have played them all to hell and back and currently I am on CC5. Can I ask any members for tips to improving my gameplay experience.

Do you play any unuesal scenarios in one player mode. Anything exciting which you can share  Laughing .

What I am really after are new ideas to get the most out of my classic game. Im pretty awesome but am a bit set in my tactical ways. I prefer the Veteran level but as the tank levels are so low. Im uesally on Recruit setting  Idea .

And OH !!. My screen has minimised. Can anyone remember the 3 hot key combination to fit to screen. I dont mean the graphic setting in the options menu. I mean like my game screen does not use the full screen area !. Actually i find this useful in seeing and controlling units, but eye strain is a issue Shocked .

Lets remember that elements of German Panzer Corps were all for reverse engineering the T34. They were so impressed the Panzer 4 was over weight by mid war and undergunned until the PAK 40 - 75mm was added. Panther was unreliable in early marks.

Tigers few in number ( not as many as you might think ). So lets stick to Normady an the tank ops there. What about the Stewart light tanks. My fave in the game as I use as a mobile pillbox. Easily moved when Nazi armour appears. But its 37mm gun was sillier than a girl smoking a pipe.

Hi DIMA

So the devils advocate is back. What really are your opinions and not just rehashing others !!.

Russian tank formations were still using flag signals in 1942. And lest not forget the Red Armys disregard for life. At the Battle of Berlin massed Ruski armour was decimated by desperate German defences on the Eastern approaches to the city. WHY ?. Well beacause the Russians in there haste to gain a glorious victory ignored the reality of the operation and there hard won tactical dominace. You can build a tank but dont crew it with monkeys.

Hi

I really :Cool love all the half tracks and armoures cars in CC5. They are a bit week in choice compared to other games of the series.

The problem is that they are cannon fodder. Every hand grenade throwing old lady can knock them out.

I always have 2 half track mortar carriers when available. They will rack up a kill score above there weight eventually. Great for suppresive fire. Which the computer A1 sucks at.

Does any one have tactics or ideas of how to maximise there potential ?.

My ideal half track would be armed with a giant net so as to capture those pesky infantry close in attacks. Failing that an 88mm cannon Twisted Evil .

HI

I have being watching a programme on WW2 tanks restored around the globe. TANK OVERHAUL has had 2 series now I think.

Confused It makes me think of which was the best WW2 tank available in CC5. And if not shown included in the game you can still comment.

I reckon maybe the Sherman Firefly - 17 pounder or maybe the Churchill AVRE. I believe a handful of King / Royal Tigers were also present in Normady.

The oddities include Russian AFV and old French tanks.

:zzz Not just the best on paper but the tanks which aquited themselves well in this campaign.

OK THIS IS THE LAST REPLY. WERE TAKING A VERY BROAD VIEW HERE. AND AS THIS IS NOT A HISTORICAL LESSON BUT THE CC FORUMS. I AM NOT SPENDING TIME BY CROSS REFERENCING ON INTERNET MY FACTS.

so what has changed since 40s regarding protection against most common AT sources?

HEAT ABSORBENT ARMOUR, REACTIVE ARMOUR, SPACED ARMOUR, CHOBHAM ARMOUR, HIGH GRADE ARMOUR, WELDED CONSTRUCTION ( ALSO WW2 ) INTELLIGENT' ARMOUR ( FUTURE ). SLOPED/SHAPED ARMOUR. BOLT ON ARMOUR FOR VARIOUS DUTIES ( ALSO FOR AFV )

does that help alot?
and yes u were wrong - WW2 tanx were designed to be pretected against most common AT sources

AGAIN THAT IS INCORRECT. AMMO STOWED IN RACKS AND READY TO USE. CHARGES/PROPELLANTS VERY COMBUSTIABLE. WHAT DO YOU MEAN >MOST COMMON AT SOURCES<. WW2 ERA TANKS RANGED FROM TANKETTES TRU TO 6 TURRET ODDITIES. AT GUNS STARTED FROM 20MM TRU TO 75MM AS A RULE OF THUMB. BY END OF WAR THE BAZOOKA/PANZERFAUST AND HIGH VELOCITY AT GUNS 88MM - 122MM RULED THE GAME. NO TANK IMPERVIOUS TO BOMB OR EXPLOSIVE. SEE IRAQ IN PRESENT DAY.

where can u c Blitzkrieg in those ops?

REALLY ???/. KURSK WAS OVERCONFIDENT AND INCOMPETENT NAZI LEADERSHIP IGNORING STRATEIGIC REALITY AND RELYING ON 'FIREPOWER' AND MANOUVERE. THEY LEARNED THERE LESSON THERE. BULDGE WAS USING SUPRISE/AIR SUPREMACY ( ALLIES GROUNDED IN BAD WEATHER ). ON A RELATIVE NEARROW FRONT TO GAIN STRATEIGIC OBJECTIVES. WHICH WERE TO SEIZE ANTWERP AND SPLIT OR TURN ALLIED FORCES. BLITZKRIEG WAS NOT KJUST TANKS, BUT COMBINED ARMS AND 'ONCE AGAIN' SUPERIOR TROOP INTELLIGENCE. A BIG SUBJECT BUT LETS NOT LOSE SIGHT OF THE REALITY HERE.

sorry mate, u r completely wrong here .

OMG ****. YES THEY DID. 2 PANZER DIVISIONS NEVER ENTERED THE FIGHT FULLY. WHAT ABOUT NORMADY. SS PANZER DIVISION NEVER MADE THE JOURNEY TO BEACHEAD AS DESTROYED EFFECTIVELY EN ROUTE. RUSSIAN II2 BUILT AS 'FLYING TANK'. ACTUALLY RUSSIN AIRPOWER BECAME VERY EFFECTIVE ON EASTERN FRONT. VERY UNDERATED. BUT THEY ALSO SUFFERED FROM POOR DOCTRINE AND LEADERSHIP IN EARLY WAR. AND LACK OF A MODERN OR STRATEIGIC AIR ARM.
BATTLE OF IWO JIMA. MARINE SHERMANS WORTH THERE WEIGHT IN GOLD, H.E AND FLAME FLUID. ISLAND BASED P51 RESPONSIBLE FOR PINNING DOWN OF LARGE SCALE JAPANESE MOVEMENTS. MARINES COULD ATTACK IN DIRESTION OF WILL AND JAPANESE RELEGATED TO STATIC DEFENSE. OK THAT IS NOT A CLEAR VIEW OF THIS BATTLE BUT YOU GET THE IDEA. ISLAND HOPPING ' WAR IN PACIFIC BY USA AN BLITZKRIEG. AVOID CENTRES OF RESISTANCE AND TAKE TACTICAL TARGETS OF CHOICE.

they could achieve LOCAL SUPERIORITY even in 1945

SURE. THEY HELD THE GROUND WHICH HAD TOO BE FOUGHT FROM THEM. MOST NAZI OFFENCES AFTER 1944 SUMMER FAILED. ON ALL FRONTS.

why then no soviet post war AVF followed T-34?
food for thoughts, eh

OMG !. IT WAS UPGRADES 3-4 TIMES. FROM ENTERING UNIT SERVICE I THINK IN 1940. AFTER ALL WHOS HEARD OF GRANTS/CHURCHILL/BT7 ON ANY ARMYS WISH LIST. AND ITS PHILOSOPHY OF SPEED/PROTECTION/GUN WAS ! DEVEOPLED FURTHER.

PzVI was designed for quality reinforcement of breakrthrough units - kinda looks it was meant to fight overhelming odds

KINDA NOTHING. WAS DESIGNED TO HAVE FIREPOWER AND ARMOUR AT LOCALITY. IF DESIGNED TO FIGHT 'OVERWHELMING ODDS' THEY WOULD HAVE CREWED IT WITH KAMIKAZI TANKEES ALL ARMED WITH POCKET HOWITZERS. THEY FOUGHT OVERWHELMING ODDS BECAUSE THEY WERE FORCED TOO IN INCREASINGLY POINTLESS OPERATIONS. THE PANZER IV WAS EVENTUALLY TO HEAVY DUE TO ITS UPGRADES WITH SOME WEAKNESSES NEVER REMEDIED.

which ones, for instance?

MOBILITY. FIRST REAL HEAVY TANK THAT COULD SPEARHEAD ASSAULTS. RUSSINA KV1A-S TO UNDERGUNNED. OPTICS EXECELLENT FOR TIGER. ELECTRIC TURRET. STOWAGE BINS FOR SHELLS. POWERFUL ( MODULAR ) ENGINE. ETC. IT WORKED AND WAS NOT A DUMB ELEPHANT.

why super heavy?
still agree that hvy tanx were substituted by MBT altho in 60-70s.

hAVE YOU NEVER HEARD OF THE T10/CONQUERER/MAUS = AMERICAN DESIGNS. TOO IMMOBILE AND VUNERABLE. ALSO COSTLY TO PRODUCE.

do u mean tank or tank forces?
and btw in 1940 USSR has already had T-34 and KV..

T34 NOT FIGHTING OPERATIONALLY UNTIL 1941 IN LOCAL COUNTER ATTACKS. UNTIL COUNTER ATTACK AT MOSCOW. RUSSI ARMOUR INADEQUATE IN FINNISH WINTER WAR.

YES SO THAT IT. THERE WERE WINNERS AND LOSERS ON ALL SIDES. GLORY AND OBLIVION IN EQUAL MEASURES.

Here you are

Quote:
Well if you look at the reality of WW2 era tanks. Metal boxes on wheels. Most offered poor protection from A.P rounds.

you think alot have changed since then ?

YES 60+ YEARS OF SCIENTIFIC ADVANCEMENT. ACTUALLY MBT ARE EXPENSIVE AND VUNERABLE TO AIR POWER/URBAN FIGHTING.

As a matter of fact fire suppression and crew survivability was not generally considered

that's not true.

YES IT IS. MIDWAR TANKS ADOPTED SOME BASIC TECHNOLOGY. AMMO WAS GENERALLY UNPROTECTED UNTIL THE 1950/60 ERA.

German armour was tactically execellent but from a strateigic viewpoint inferior.

rite on the contrary.

I DISAGREE. LOOK AT KURSK AND THE BULGE. ALLIED AIRPOWER WREAKED HAVOC ON BLITZKRIEG. AT KURSK HUNDREDS OF GERMAN TANKS KNOCKED OUT BY STORMBIRDS FIGHTER BOMBERS. NAZI DOCTRINE RELIED ON SUPERIOR TRAINING AND LOCAL SUPERIORITY + EXECELLENT COMMUNICATIONS. THEY SLOWLY LOST ALL OF THESE AND THEN THERE INIATIVE

Remember the T34 was really a brilliant mechanical design.

really?

ARE YOU SERIOUS ?. T34 FIGHTING UNTIL 1990S. MORE IMPORTANTLY UPGUNNED AND CHASIS USED FOR OTHER AFVS. A ROLLS ROYCE OF TRACTOR TECHNOLOGY

By the late war the allies would go on to produce BETTER tanks - centurion/chaffee/Staliin which worked. The Nazi tanks had lost there edge.

why those were better than the german ones?

THE STALIN II/III WERE SUPERIOR. EVOLVED FOR 30 YEARS. TH EPHILOSOPHY OF THERE DESIGN. SAME WITH CHAFEE , ALWAY THRU TO M60. GERMANS WERE OF COURSE EXECELLENT, IM NOT SILLY AND DENYING THAT. BUT WERE NOT SUPERWEAPONS !!.

He drove Tigers which were great tank Vs Tank killers. But against combined and overwhelming forces. Were to little and overwhelmed.

Tiger was designed to fight overhelming forces

RUBBISH !. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN. TIGER WAS DESIGNED FOR 88MM GUN. AND OTHER TECHNILOGCAL IMPROVMENTS. REALLY A SUPER HEAVY TANK. THIS PHASED OUT BY THE 50S FOR THE MBT. A MEDIUM HEAVY TANK !.

In 1940 france had the best armour in the world. Unfortunately with the exception of a few independant brigades was used shockingly in combat. Relegated to infantry support which is the exact opposite of Blitzkrieg philosophy

doctrine (check above) was poor = the french didn't have "the best armour in the world".

THEY HAD NUMBERS AND SOME OF THE BEST ARMOURED/GUNNED TANKS. SIMPLE

The overunning of Europe cost the Germans dearly in casualties and industrial dependancy.

explain, plz .

OK THIS IS A BROAD SUBJECT. GERMANS TOOK MASSIVE KIA. STRIPPING GERMANY OF DEFENCES AND FIGHTING ON THREE FRONTS. MASSIVE PROBLEMS WITH EUIPMENT COMMONALITY AND SUPPLY. ETC ETC

Who did have the best armour and more importantly' - tactics - leadership - skilled crews - industrial backup ?. I dont know really. You could argue the Russians at the spring of 45.

or the americans, or the germans?

ANY FURTHER COMMENTS ?

.....................................................................................................

So any war is a logistical one. Especially WW2.

Back again after a short think

The East Front accounted for 75% of army manpower in 1943. And thats without all there allies . Easily forgotten is the huge manpower and industrail resources from countries such as Romania/Italy/France. With all the slave and forced labour they also had at there disposal'. Millions were brutalised to death for the Nazi war production. To produce 'Hearses'. Never happened in free countreis. There the industrial IQ of a nations people was properly utilised. Rosy the riveter and Betty the air raid warden.

So anyway I will look forward to your reply.

Cheers

Thanks Dima

Well if you look at the reality of WW2 era tanks. Metal boxes on wheels. Most offered poor protection from A.P rounds. No fancy climate control or air con. As a matter of fact fire suppression and crew survivability was not generally considered. They were DEATH TRAPS !!.

The panzer driver was origionally a mechanic in a car engine factory. Which became a cover when they switched production to Panzer engines. He was drafted and fought in most theatres thru the war. Of course as the defeated and hated' enemy at the end of the war. There was no understanding of his PTSD and 'sacrifices.

German armour was tactically execellent but from a strateigic viewpoint inferior. By this I mean early - mid war the Panzer II - V rained almost supreme. But was beset by rushed upgrades and poor mechinical reliability and mechanical over complexity. Shermans and T34 were not really inferior in design. They had no fancy extras though ( especially the T34 ). Remember the T34 was really a brilliant mechanical design. But with the origional small turret and lack of finesse appeared worse than compariable designs.

By the late war the allies would go on to produce BETTER tanks - centurion/chaffee/Staliin which worked. The Nazi tanks had lost there edge.

On the 'Hearse' comment. The German panzer driver told the real thoughts of your avergae army blockhead. He drove Tigers which were great tank Vs Tank killers. But against combined and overwhelming forces. Were to little and overwhelmed.

Remember the crew makes a tank a efficient weapon. Aliied crews overcame 'panzer fright' and beat the Nazis at there own Blitzkrieg.

Food for thought.

Thanks

Richard

Thanks for the chit chat. Well not sure where the UK/USA rivalry comes from. The yanks never really produced any brilliant '' equipment. But it worked and was available. Same for the Brits. Both countries were asleep and struggled and eventually won the war of production.

As a matter I read a cracking memoir of a German Panzer driver. He explained that Hitler equipped him with the best available death traps ( especially as the Nazis lost the techonoligical advantage ). Hitler gave them Hearses and they duly drove to theirs and many others deaths !. Food for thought !!.

Is there a way of gaining or at least maximising tank units to play. The Germans have a dearth of armour, just those useless Marder III :zzz .

Can you recommend any mods or maybe a walkthru to gain as much armour as possible. Tigers and assault SPG needed !.

Hi

I cannot play my 3 year old copy of CC5/Bulge on my new laptop. Is it windows vista compatiable ?.

The game is installed and when I play it comes with various messages such as ' stream fix error' etc. I have tried all variations of playing on windows 95/98 etc using the windows games problem fixer.

Can a patch or another downolad help this . Is it a driver or a graphics issue. Any answers very much appreciated !!.
