I am sure that this is a bug in CC, but it seems like when playing the enemy in campaign modes the armored vehicles seem to wander around, go back and forth and look lost when attacking. sometimes when the enemy attacks, they don't attack in full force. It would be nice if the enemy sent in five or six tanks at a time in AI mode to go up against, but if there are any fixes for this, please let me know.....
The AI in CC is the biggest downside to the game. The game is entirely different (entirely better) when played head-to-head against an online opponent. The AI will never put together a complete attack or a complete defense. Your main line of resistance will be attacked by a lone AT squad, while the the rest of the enemy crawls around looking for the major's contacts. The AI does somewhat better when forced into small deployment areas.
The AI is hard-coded into the game and can't be modified, even by the geniuses around here. You may wish to try CCII A Bridge Too Far which has a marginally better AI, but outdated graphics.
This is a really old post, but I thought I would reply for fun...
Sometimes in CCV your vehicle crew becomes injured. (i.e. Not dead and Not unconcious). Somestimes as many as 3 or more crewman are injured at once, from enemy fire. When this happens, and you give the vehicle an instruction, like move, they will appear to be lost. They are trying to move, they just can't do it well because they are messed up. Also if you give them a fire instruction, they wont fire, because they are too messed up to load and shoot.
Also, sometimes, the vehicle crew is just freaked out from the battle. You see this with infantry. You order them to move fast across the field, and they freak, becuase they are scared or they think your order is stupid. They try for the destination, but they loose their nerve and return, or drop and look for cover. They appear to wander. Vehicles can do the same.
Sometimes if you plot movement, the actuall terrain elements along the path, are not passable by the vehicle, so the vehicle appears to wander while it searches for a "clear path". The "resolution" of terrain elements is not fine enough, and although the terrain looks clear, its terrain element code (contained in the map ".txt" file) says otherwise.

The best AI in my opinion is actually the demo. I reloaded it recently to try something and I got quite a shock. The AI struck hard with most of their squads with MG support, smoke and tank attacking. I still beat them cause once they comit to an attack they never let up but it was nothing like the AI of the full game.
I also played as the germans to see how the AI defended and they counterattacked hard too. Strange that it changed so much from the demo to the full release.
