Hello wizards and artists. I've also posted this same query at CSO. I hope it's kosher to post the same question in both places.

I am new to maps. My thought was to review existing or contributed maps and see how they were put together, along with reading the map making guides before I started. So far so good.

However, when I tried to load some of the maps I downloaded (by changing the names to existing maps) I found they were missing the .btd files. Looking around I discovered there are at least two utilities out there to edit/create .btd files: btdmunger and btdedit. I found a copy of btdedit but it will not open the .btd files I currently have or create new usable .btd files. I get a java.lang.NullPointerException error when I try and load a .btd file of an existing map or a map I have saved.

Can anyone give me some pointers to a working .btd editor or a clue on how to use the copy of btdedit I currently have?

Following a suggestion from the CSO forum I re-installed a copy of the older Microsoft VM (on a computer that had no previous installs of java or VM) and I got the same error message when I tried to open a .btd file.

My uneducated guess is that I need a better copy of btdedit.

I am using/editing CCV stock, no mods.

TIA

Thanks for taking the time to respond to a newb, ANZAC_Lord4war.

I downloaded the version of VM you linked. I uninstalled the version I had loaded, including removing files and registry keys. Then I installed the linked version.

I got the same error message.

As I said, my guess is uneducated but I'm thinking it's a bad copy of btdedit. I have not been able to find another anywhere. If I could get a link to a working btdedit or btd munger I would appreciate it.

qclone works just fine. So does the config manager. The only one that doesn't work, so far, is btdedit.
