Hi all

Was just wondering if people here have played Theatre of War and if they have what do they think of it? I saw it in the shops and it looked a bit like CC, have been waiting for a CC6 for years now.

So is the gameplay as satisfying as CC was or should I pass it by?

Thanks Smile

What did u people not like about Theatre of War?

Just played the demo, and I'd say it has potential. Can't run the demo mission Villers Bocage on highest settings, my rig won't do that. Apart form that, it's fun, and looks great. Took me a few tries to get a feeling for it though; CC is more "plug and play".

I'd love to see some of my GJS maps converted to ToW; shouldn't be that hard actually. Especially maps like Hill 112, Bourguebus and such lend themselves very well for the ToW style of gameplay. Better than CC actually, with realistic gunnery ranges.

Infantry cannot enter buildings (dunno if they've patched this issue)...because ToW uses the IL2 flight-sim engine Wink

Infantry can't enter buildings indeed...I'd considder that a minor issue. Most of the battlefield is outdoors anyways.

What I miss is the true Normandy bocage country though, although I've got hopes that it might be possible to change that with the map editor. Might even get me into modding once more Wink

Lebisey Woods eh...quess that's not gonna happen. CC is nice, time for something new though. I quess ToW comes a long way in what I'd like CC to be; in 3D.

Looks like WWII Online on steroids. I sure would like to play ToW just for the eye candy but my poor PC would have a stroke trying to run it.

Actually WWII Online is a first-person shooter, which has nothing to do with ToW. ToW is a real-time tactical game, much like CC. Actually the designers told in an interview they were inspired by CC, which is very well noticable when you play it.

In fact it brings a lot of features the CC-crowd has been wishing for; larger maps, more teams on the maps, infantry and armor graphics to scale. Infantry that can use halftracks. Artillery that can be towed and relocated. Capturing enemy equipment. Ballistics and such are probably better than in CC.

The advantage of 3D, except for eyecandy ofcourse, is that one can actually "read" the landscape. GJS maps like Hill 112 and Bourguebus have hight differences across the map that have a major impact on the tactical picture, but it's hard, if not impossible to make that visible to the player. With 3D you don't have that problem. The main advantage of a 2D game is that it's easier to get an overview of the battle. However with the way control is implemented in ToW it's just as easy to grasp what's happening as it is in Close Combat.

I don't have the time to convert GJS into ToW I'm afraid Wink Still, I might make an operation or two based on GJS. And yes, it's possible to play operations and campaigns online, although I don't particularly like the stock ops and campaign.

ToW is a memory-hog indeed; you'll need a good computer to run it. My rig comes to a screatching halt when there are more than 15 teams per side on the map...than again, it's interesting to re-create some CC-battles Wink

I wouldnt say WWIIOnline was an FPS. There was an intricate damage model and no FPS style health bars. You do play the game in the 1st person, but I would not label it FPS.

well, i wasn't inspired by the fiirst release but i've read that they upgraded it to be more realistic and CC-like...guess it's time to get new version Smile.

I thought ToW was based on the Combat Mission Series (the original series moved on to modern warfare).
Still can't beat CC for me.
And the graphics are nowhere near Faces of War or Company of Heroes...although I can't really say too much about the gameplay of FoW or CoH...nothing CC-like.

I tyred TOW. Bought new graphix card and added some ram to let my PC
launching the game. It quiet interesting to me because TOW look very
complete for moding and building scenario.
You v got a fine editor to build what u want about map.
The editor allow you to add any weapon to the battlefield.
Now the game look like a bit complicated. As u v got so many game option
and so many unit's movement and react option.
The game let you play in cooperative way.
i'm still waiting the patch who let you be compatible to playing in H2H
versus an none french game.
The patch will add new editor tutorial much easier to handle.
unfortunatly, it still unable to your team to entering building. It's for me
a big problem as u cannot climb any roof to ambush some sniper or mg.
Anyway, i still waiting CC6 as for me is more playable because the CC
engine game look like easier to handle for anyone. As u v got enought with
2 hand to control the mouse and all the order key. What is impossible in
TOw with our 2 hand Wink

Tout est possible ... il faut juste connaitre quand.

The last I heard of is TOW developers are working on a standalone addon that adds the feature of entering building. We'll see how it turns out by then.

Have you guys heard a realistic WW2 tank simulation called Steel Fury
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=goxPJDA3WVo

The developer - graviteam is working on a realistic rts (Steel Fire)
based on the same game engine. I am sure I'll keep an eye on this one.

Somebody at the Battlefront forum managed to find some sneek-peeks of this building patch and it looked quite good.

Of course they'll still have to develope a strat layer after that to bring their game up to the standard of CC V (and put clear blue water between themselves and the competition in this increasingly crowded market)!

I, for one, hadn't, but many thanks for the video link! There were infantry there too.

"Realistic" - I'll drink to that!
