I just watched a documentary about the search team that found the wreckage of HMAS Sydney. For those who dont know the story, the ship dissapeared without a trace November 19, 1941 off the West Australian coast. A few days later German sailors began appearing in life boats along the coast, telling the story of a battle with a cruiser. The last they saw, the cruiser was on fire heading south, while they skuttled their raider HSK Kormoran and took to life boats.
Over the years there were a lot of theories about the sinking, and to date 25 books have been written including 1 stating that a Japanese submarine sunk her!
The team that found the ship is the same one that found the Hood a few years ago, amazing technology, lots of research, a very interesting story..
dang it, missed the show, but have been reading lost about the find, and photos.
remember earlier last year a mob said they found sydney, what happened, same people, i think from memory it was a small local team, but failed to bring proof.
G'day all, yes Grunt it was an excellent documentary. Plus the expert, David Mearns, who found the ship gave a precise detailed explanation on why the ship was lost and why there were no survivors, based on the evidence they found on the sea floor. It all made sense, and puts an end to all the conspiracy theories (Especially the Japanese submarine one, or the dingo with the limpet mine). It was also good to hear from a senior German officer from the Kormoran who is still alive today and gave great testimony, I wondered whether any of them could be traced. There is still no reason why the Sydney allowed herself to get so close to a suspected enemy ship (Less than 1000m), but one theory that was put forward was that Sydney had been ordered by naval HQ to close with and capture the ship to obtain an operational Enigma machine. Tack, I suggest you get yourself a copy of the programme from someone who taped it, great viewing and very emotional.
