Does anyone have tips, suggestion or tactics on how to kill enemy tanks?

There will be a guide published here soon and I hope to add all user contributions.

First off, tactics are nothing but a means to an end, meaning whatever you can do to get the job done, so be it. However, when I was in the USMC and took their course on AntiTank Operations, the number one thing that I got from it is layering your abilities.

Your first line of AT defense should be your short range weapons, infantry based wpns. Your next layer should be all medium ranged weapons, light to medium AT guns, or their infantry equivalent. Then finally, you should have all your long range AT weapons in the last layer. 88mm, 90mm, 105mm, or the like. So in the end what you get is a wall of fire that should look something like this:

Long range wpns ---------------------------------------[
Medium range wpns __________------------------[
Short range wpns ___________________-----[

Of course, you will have things like terrain, or line of sight or some such other "x" factors that will either enhance or impede this ability, but this is a good starting point.

Then there is the other tactic of pinning your opponents armor in place by using artillery. First and foremost on this is that artillery against armor is a poor way of killing tanks (in real life), but it does force your opponent to "button up", meaning to have his armor crews close all their combat hatches and reducing their visibility to about a 40 to 70 degree field of vision. This will allow you to either have infantry AT teams to move into place to do the actual killing or have aircraft to come in and kill off whatever they can (in real life aircrews will not fly into an area where arty is being placed as the fear of being hit by a flying shell is a very real possibility.).

This is not a comprehensive way or the end all be all of anti-armor operations, but this will be a good starting point for everyone. Good luck and happy hunting.

Excellent points. About tanks buttoning up... I believe this is done in CC5. When the 1st shot is fired when you a green circle, the circle turns to black if you miss or damage representing the hathes closing. This is usually the case with infantry anti armour weapons.

The artillery is a good idea also... Open topped tanks are particularly vulnerable to medium mortar and especially heavy mortar fire. I have purposly not brought in open top armour to a battle for this reason.

Nice explained Mortis...

Also learn to play with terms as 'total kill, mobility kill and firepower kill... Smile

I have a very good tutorial from a former clanmember. Unfortunately, it is in German. And I don't have the time to translate it for you at the moment.
It covers all stuff, not only tanks.
I post a link to it here, perhaps you can use it anyhow.

See http://www.closecombatseries.net/CCS/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=5086&highlight=unit+tips

but in short:

- if you have global firepower superiority or when playing against AI, cover the likely avenues of approach and fire away!

- if you do not have global fire superiority, get local firepower superiority by

* setting up out of direct LOS to the enemy line of advance
* setting up obliquely (ie at angles) to the enemy line of advance
* creating overlapping fields of fire
* using smoke and suppression fire from supporting units to isolate advancing armor

Cheers,

Roel

Sometimes I just use my 2nd line infantry to keep enemy tanks busy while I try to pound them with my obsolete AT guns. Sometimes you get something done.

One way to take out a tank that`s pushed into your line,

is to have a couple of non AT units spread with say a bazooka. Once in position (the offending tank) and not facing, run a unit, I tend to use snipers for this sort of suicidal mission away from your bazooka team, allowing the tank to turn it`s weaker sides to the bazooka team, it`s really 50/50 for the sniper but his sacrifice saves a lot more lives.

It`s a pity CC doesn`t recognise that sort of action, the sniper will be lucky to receive a purple heart, usually posthumously.

I did say a couple of non AT units, you don`t want them bunched up together rather with the bazzoka team at the centre of a triangle of "runners". Doing this increases the chance for success in taking out the armour. Since, if there is only one runner team and the armour turns in the opposite direction of where you would prefer it to be the move fails and the position is lost.

In the case that there are infantry supporting I tend, if possible, to bring in mortar behind that infantry. By doing so trapping those units and the armour crew, maybe it`s just me but I always make an effort to take out the crew.
