I wonder how long this community would last if every modder would adopt the "hey, look, I made a cool mod, but I won't upload it because it's a modification of a game. Luckily everyone who want to play it can make a mod for themselves with community made tools." approach  . |

You got it just backwards.
CC5 and CCMT maps must be copyrighted. If you make signigicant mods to them (i.e. change them), then as some point the copyright does not apply. I used to think the standard was 30%.
If I just cutdown a map, the 30% does not apply. And if maps are already square they are un-modified and the copyright still applies to them as well.

Except that you got a permission from a S3T/Matrix Games representative who also said that he can host them on the official Matrix Games CCMT site.
