Thanks for the visual representation. Gave me a chuckle. Also add to this how the round landed directly behind the panther. You could argue it bounced off the armour but I am sure you didn't hear a ping.
There's a couple trains of thought on bailed out crew...
1. Crew stays with wreck. The drawback here is the crew will fight to the last man if the wreck is overrun.
2. Crew runs away, simulates crew heading back to friendly lines. This option is broken though as your example proves. This train of thought is what influenced what you show in your screenshots. Side effects are losing even more morale, losing experienced tank crew and general frustration.
3. Crew is able to take orders. You have the option of using the tank crew in your advance/defence now or you can send them back to a safer area on the map to ensure survival.
Option 2 & 3 works if your crews do get recycled (CC3 style) after losing their vehicle. If they don't get recycled, have them sit with the wreck if the game code can't be fixed.
Option 3 would be best if the experienced crewman could be used further on down the campaign. This would give you incentive to keep them safe, and not use them as cannon fodder.

The sliders at set at even everything and middle and a panzer IV pulls this.. I think the true middle is back towards recruit some or they somehow put vet difficulty at mid level. That's 7 tanks.....

The slider is not really difficulty, its the amount of troops each side gets.

BTW,
Option 3 is what happens in CCMT. Just another reason why I like CCMT tactical combat best.

I usually play with controllable tank crews for both me and the AI and use them for various suicide missions such as distracting enemy artillery or mortars. Not much of a loss really since they are usually 1-5 lightly armed men who will disappear from the force pool anyway. If they can save some of my regular troops I think they've fulfilled a better purpose than just disappearing.
