Really? 2nd time it has happened to me. Did mortar's have this ability in other CC titles?
Yeah it's luck. I remember taking out 1 unlucky StuG tank with a lucky shot from an 81mm in cc5. I was close to the target. I am sure others here have done it. I tried this again, but only immobilized 1 about 8 tries later If I remember right.
In Gateway to Caen the British 3 inch mortars are the same caliber as around 81mm US, as well as the Germans. From what I have heard top tank armor is thin anyways and you have the thin escape hatches on the turret and in the back on top of the engine not much separates the engine from the top upper wall. Playing GTW the Axis would constantly target my shermans, stuarts and carriers like this. Just keep moving back and forth until they run out, or just keep moving your tanks.. A mortar is only really good for stationary targets, but they can get lucky.

I've been unfortunate enough to play the same map (Cheux) against the same player (He shall remain nameless) several times in the same setup.
(Has this happened to you?)
He runs approximately 7-9 Panthers against my standard British battlegroup.

I've found that a great tactic to use is a mortar (3in) or if I *have them, an off map mortar battery, firing in the middle of a gaggle of Panthers and going for immobilization.
-I don't advocate using a battery against AFVs unless its a one-off battle, it obviously doesn't always work and the assets could be better used elsewhere.
-That being said, it's never a great idea to use a battery against AFVs if the player also has infantry units knocking about!

In August of 2004, Zappi, Homba, Bambam887, RedScorpion and MOOXE all pitched
in to create this Close Combat site. I would to thank all the people who have visited
and found this site to thier liking. I hope you had time to check out some
of the great Close Combat mods and our forums. I'd also like to thank
all the members of our volunteer staff that have helped over
the years, and all our users that contributed to this site!
