How about this, it worked for me when install from the CD hung at the stage of trying to install obsolete DirectX techology.

1. copy contents of the CD to the hard drive.
2. check permissions for autorun.inf change if necessary
3. open and delete all instructions except:

[autorun]
open=CC3Setup.Exe /autorun
icon=CC3.Exe,0

shell\setup=Install Close Combat III: The Russian Front
shell\setup\command=cc3setup.exe /autorun

4. save and close, remove CD.
5. in the XP Start menu, select run and point the command to

C:\ whichever is your directory \CC3SETUP.EXE /autorun

It then installs. It spends a while looking for DirectX but gives up after a while and completes installation successfully.
