I've look around the web for close combat 5 sound editor's and haven't found any. If there isn't is there any simple way for me to modify them myself?. I'd just like to add and/or replace the death sounds to something a little less cheesy.
I meandered a bit with Audacity. Looks complicated, I'm totally lost. Hopefully someone knows of a simple dirty way to modify them.
You'll need to extract the .wav files - the sound effects with the downloadable sfx unpacker (works for cc3 etc).
Once you've got your files and know what you want to replace you can then find your replacement files.
Keep the unpacked files i a folder called "Wave" - for when they need to be repacked.
CC5 was a bit awkward using .adb files but there is a tool that can be used to edit and unpack them - I'll need to look the name up as I can't remember it off hand [QClone - may need Win XP]. In that you'll be able to see the references for numerous functions. You'll want to open the Weapons.adb file and use this to identify the unpacked sounds - second to last number if I remember rightly in each section. Depending on which CC game you're modding they may or may not support a larger number of new sound references - for example a Bren Gun may use sound ref 26 out of 90, it could be shared with other weapons so you may change the Bren Gun ref to 91 to give it a unique sound. Then you would save your replacement sound as 0091.wav before moving it into the "Wave" folder.
Lets leap a bit forward and assume you have your replacement sounds, they're saved as .wav and you're now ready to move to the next part.
Overwrite or add your new files to the "Wave" folder, check the Weapons.adb references match then using the sfx tool pack the Wave folder into a new sfx file to be renamed "Sound.sfx" and placed in the "LocalFX" folder.
The only problem you are likely to have is the number of files you might add. I had 168 for CC5 and it wouldn't load, CC3 CoI has 179 and does work.
Any problems that I can help with please do get in touch and I'll try to help. I'll see about getting the name of the program for the .adb files also.
