"Software assistance has been around for a while. When it is practical to use, it provides more accurate environmental readings and that's all. The program helps the pair "walk it in" to the target with less shots.
It doesn't equalise the shooter or spotters skill level. It literally takes years of practice to get to a level of skill where you can hit a 35" plate at 3+km. It still won't be consistent though, even when fired from the exact same trajectory with hand loads. Differences in barrel temps and slight changes of wind in multiple directions mean it would be a minor miracle if they hit the target with a single shot.
What has advanced the effective range far more than software is the hardware now available, notably the calibre and quality of rifling. In the 60's/70's the options were limited to 308/30-06 or 50 Cal with nothing in between. Since then calibres have been developed that lose little energy at long range (338 and 6.5) , yet are more practical on shoulders for extended use. In addition, barrels have been developed with more precision and paired with more ergonomic stocks, so that even when a 50-cal is used as was the case here, recoil is minimised. They do however come at an extra cost. Approx. 10k AUD in the US and closer to 20k AUD in Oz."

No cannot confirm, I am far removed was operational type stuff right now. The soldier was from JTF-2 and they are highly secretive, except when it comes to this I guess.

There are many different nationalities serving in Iraq. As there own troops when left to it drop the weapons and run for the border. The MSM seem to have missed this part. Foreign soldiers holding up another corrupt regime it's own people won't fight for..........................lol. Democracy at work Western style.
