Ukraine is being made as "suitcase without a handle" - it’s hard to carry and it’s a pity to leave). At the same time, it becomes increasingly difficult for the United States to shift its debt to the rest of the world by printing more and more dollars. - https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2022/12/15/ukraine-economy-russia-war-crisis/

No you mis-understand the US debt. We have plenty of money as does Western Europe to continue to support Ukraine with humanitarian and military assistance for many many years. We are not going to stop no matter how many times Putin wants to taunt or saber rattle. The high debt you refer to is from dysfunctional tax system, the rich people have tremendous power and refuse to pay enough taxes to eliminate the debt supported by elected officials. The US debt can be paid in full very easily if the rich people paid more taxes. Currently they pay less than middle class people with more sophisticated tax evasion laws which favor them.

Good article today from NY Times:
"...I spoke to Anton Troianovski, the Moscow bureau chief and one of the lead reporters on the story, about how Putin came to decide to go to war.
Claire: When Russia invaded Ukraine in February, experts believed that Russia would quickly conquer Ukraine. That didn’t happen. What is the main reason that the war went so badly for Russia?
Anton: It was a cascade of failures, and at the top is Putin’s own misguidedness, his own isolation and his own conviction that he knew what was best. The Russian military was unprepared all the way down to a tactical level, like using Soviet-era maps. Like using their cellphones to call home, which gave away their positions and allowed them to be ambushed or attacked. There wasn’t enough food to feed the soldiers.
We got hold of actual copies of some of the invasion plans that some of the Russian military units had, which showed them expecting to race toward Kyiv within hours of invading. Russian military leaders didn’t think they’d need any reinforcements.
I talked to many people who knew Putin personally, and they told me that the decision to go to war was based on his gut feeling. Putin didn’t seem to think he needed advice on the wisdom of this invasion. Putin was convinced that he knew best, that he understood Ukraine and its place in history as well as his own."

"....We’ve talked a lot about what went wrong for Russia, and of course the war isn’t over. Is there anything that is going well?
Putin recognizes that things haven’t gone to plan, but that doesn’t mean he’s going to fold. He is willing to accept a lot of casualties — up to 300,000, according to what one NATO member is now telling allies. The way Putin looks at it is that the Soviet Union lost 27 million people in World War II, and he’s convinced that the Russian people are prepared to suffer — more than people in the West.
Something else that has gone well from the Kremlin’s point of view is the country’s propaganda machine. It helped convince many Russians that the war was not going disastrously wrong, and that it was the West that was forcing Russia to fight. In addition, sanctions haven’t derailed the Russian economy the way the West had hoped, and much of the world hasn’t turned its back on Russia they way some expected."

they need another blow, something to leave them bleeding seriously. The energy blackmail didn't actually work in Europe in Putler's favour.

Guess who he honors with that call sign. Hint: Not an allied pilot.

It is perfectly reasonable for Ukraine to aspire to be like the old German fighter aces of WW2 or copy other German military styles in their fight against Russia. Especially given the fact Germany was the only European power to really bring it at Russia and put some serious pain on them in last 100+ years. Defeated Imperial Russia in WWI forcing surrender. And nearly defeated them again in the early stages of WW2 invasion. So close that Stalin secretly asked Bulgarian ambassador to explore what peace offers Germany might accept. I noticed that Ukraine has started to paint white cross on vehicles another obvious copy of Germans. Nobody else in over 100 years has put some serious pain on Russia other than the Germans.

Yes it reminds me of Germans after they starting to lose the Battle of Britain. Just when Luftwaffe was on the verge of air supremacy victory vs RAF, they switched to attacks on infrastructure & urban civilian targets to retaliate vs RAF strikes on Germany. Then the Germans abandoned the tactical strikes on RAF, giving England time to replace lost aircraft and win back air superiority.
Now Russia ammo and missile inventories are depleted with their obsession to strike civilian targets. Instead of using those resources for tactical operations to try to win, they have chosen to opt for vengeance and war crimes.
|
Comparison with Battle of Britain makes no sense. Better compare with allied strategic bombing campaign or NATO bombing of Yugoslavia.
You consider the bombings as reprisal attacks to innocent civilian targets but I don't think so.
There's a clear logic in the bombing: now, Ukraine must decide if remaining power, energy and resources must go to military or to civilian uses. More strain to Banderites.
|
Former American ambassador to Russia, Michael McFaul shared my viewpoint today citing the similarities of Germans failed strategic bombing tactics vs Britain 1940 with Russia's strategy of attacking urban civilian targets.
Just fyi - Michael McFaul is the guy whom Putin demanded that Trump "surrender" to him at the Helsinki conference.
The comparison fits because the Germans similar to Russians were losing a battle of attrition vs the RAF and were not able to use effective tactics. Russia is delusional to believe that by keeping Ukrainian women and child cold with no heat or terror tactics on civilian targets will change the course of war. It does not. And Russian now has depleted its scarce missile inventories that could have been better used vs military targets.

“Trade with Russia has declined significantly as a result, though it's still slightly higher in value than last year due to soaring energy and commodity prices.”
