As the mist cleared over the scarred and pockmarked battlefields of Groesbeek heights, the crew of a Konigstiger tank were brewing tea. They chatted merrily as the steam from their mess tins tins swirled lazily into the cold, crisp air. An Aufklarer unit had dug in a few meters from the tank, and they were keeping a lookout.

Suddenly a shrill cry reverberated through the air. “3 17 pounders, get in to the tank, open fire!” The crew immediately began clambering inside the tank. A shell from the 17 pounders smashed into the front of the Konigstiger, ricocheted of the armor and hurtled away.

“Quicker!”, bellowed the commander. Once the crew were inside the tank the gunner laid the big 88mm gun onto the the enemy anti-tank gun and fired. “Direct hit! Two more left! Hurry up, loader!” said the commander. The gunner was already centering the next 17 pounder in the reticles of his gun sight. Oozing sweat, the gunner thumbed the fire button. “Ja”, called out the commander, “One more left!”
“I can't quite get LOS!” cried the gunner.
“I'll call for reinforcements,” replied the commander.

A few minutes later reinforcements arrived in the shape of a Mark IV tank and a few infantry units. This came as a great relief to the commander, who ordered that the Mark IV should go for the last 17 pounder. Sure enough, the Mark IV ventured from cover and destroyed the last anti-tank gun.

Then the commander spotted something moving out from the line of trees at the other side of the map. “Three Firefly's, open fire!” A shell from one of the Firefly's made some earth fountain all over the Konigstiger. Maddened, the gunner swung his turret towards the already doomed Firefly and unleashed a lethal shot, which smacked into the turret of the Firefly and blew it clean off. Then the Firefly's ammunition exploded with a chain reaction. KABOOM!

The commander turned his binoculars away from the Firefly to the Mark IV. He saw its 75mm gun's muzzle flash, and heard an ear shattering explosion as the Firefly was blown onto its side. “One more fly left,” he said calmly. He thought he would surely win the battle. But then he saw the Mark IV tank irrupt. The next thing he knew, the Firefly's barrel was turning towards him. “Nein!” There was a bright white flash.

After clambering out of the burning hulk of the King Tiger, he was taken prisoner by the allies. He didn't know where the rest of his crew were.

The supreme German commander soon got message of what had happened to the King Tiger, and raised the white flag.

In August of 2004, Zappi, Homba, Bambam887, RedScorpion and MOOXE all pitched
in to create this Close Combat site. I would to thank all the people who have visited and
found this site to thier liking. I hope you had time to check out some of the great Close Combat
mods and our forums. I'd also like to thank all the members of our volunteer staff that have
helped over the years, and all our users that contributed to this site!
