after watching a few shows and talking to a few of my fellow WW2 buffs, I starting to notice that people are starting to think that the panther tank is better than the tiger. As a strong believer in the tiger, i tired to say that Flak 88 is better than the panther's 75mm cannon, which was shot down. so im asking your opinion on this topic, Which is better and why.

The intimidating presense of any sort of Tiger on the battlefield can never be denied. Nor can it's power, that's for certain. None the less it's drawbacks were numerous and well documented.

At the end of the day, once the bugs were ironed out, the Panther was the best all around tank in the world at the time. The culmination of everything the germans needed in a tank. The same really cannot be said about the Tiger.

I'm not an expert, but knowing what I do I have to go with the Panther.

panther, simply because of its superior speed and lighter weight

:Cool Without doubting it, the tiger; The panther, created many problems of suspension, transmission, etc., in the first versions. In addition its firepower is minor who the one of the Tiger, that although but heavy and therefore, but slow, did not create these mechanical problems.

Greetings

A Panzer V Panther G would definetly win a Panzer VI Tiger E in a duel.

Hmmm, this is a hard one.

The Tiger have good fire power and protection.
However its slow, heavy and very complicated to produce and repair.

The Panther have good frontal protection, but the side armor isn't that good.
The fire power is very good.
But as same as the Tiger,is very complicated to produce and repair.

But i would rahter choose a Tiger Ausf E.
Why?
Becaus you can always rely on the 88 to knock out anything you point it at.
And you can rely on the armor to save your ass. Very Happy

General der Panzertruppen Guderian and von Manteuffel ,Two of the best WWII tank commanders chose Panther as the best MBT of the war. Therefore ,With respect to "Mighty Tiger" tank ,I follow the opinion of my favorite generals of the WWII Wink

Panther.

For starts the 75mm KwK42 L/70 gun mounted on the Panther was superior to the Tiger's 88mm KwK36 L/56.

The Panther also had a longer range at around 200km to the Tigers 140km, was faster 46km/h on road and 24km/h cross country to the Tiger's 38km/h and 20km/h.

On the other hand the Tiger did have a larger ammo count at 92 rounds to the Panthers 85 rounds. The Tiger also had thicker armour in most areas, thou thats not taking into account the Panther's sloped armor.

Panther is the best, the Panther had the best balance of speed, protection and firepower. The Tiger had firepower and protection but suffered in the speed area.

The Panther also incorporated the sloping armor, which allowed it to be lighter. The High felocity KwK L/70 7.5cm could penetrate just about anything out there. The Panther was the better tank.

here is a similar argument which happened in GJS thread recently.

a quote from a german panzer site
``A fearsome weapon in itself, the Tiger's effectiveness was maximised to its full potential when it found itself under the command of such talented individuals as Michael Wittmann and his equally skilful crew.``

actually the tiger could up to 23 mph which is good for a heavy tank then.

There is a very interesting book to help in this discussion - Arms of destruction (from Robert A. Slayton).
In his opinion, the best tank is the one that that present the best balance between the trinity of lethality, survivability and availability.
Following this idea, he points that the best tank of the war was the T-34/85 because the Tiger thought with better firepower and thickest armor, was very difficult to produce and keep operational.
The Panther was the German answer to the T-34. It combined a superb design with sloped armor and a gun that "had not the charisma of the 88mm, but in truth, it was a better tank killer by far."
In his opinion, the Panther was better balanced than the Tiger and that made it a winner.
On the other side, the T-34/85 even loosing on the categories firepower and armor, had superior speed, and above all was easy to produce and to keep operational. And that means that it was available on the battlefield. The production numbers of that tank reached 11.778 units in 1944!

Best regards,
Rob

Only in anti-infantry rol the tiger was better than the panther due to his 88mm HE shells. The Panther 75mm highspeed gun was more effective in anti-tank porpouse and the panther armor as heavy as tiger. Speed and small turret are relevant in tank duels too.

And the Panther was easier to produce than the Tiger. Germany could produce two Panthers with the resources wasted in one single Tiger. That made the Panther tank more available on the battlefield. I choose the Panther too.

Tiger, because The armor and 88 make it almost invincible, even if it's slow.
The Panther, on the other hand, is vulnerable to tank destroyers, etc.

I just learned something! The first Tiger to come to north Africa seized up, and the next broke down - They had almost no reliability.

However, The Tiger's 88 could penetrate the front of a Sherman at a mile's range.
