Well, first I'd like to say I've already read the full CC5 manual in PDF, a lot of things are wrong or missing as far as I can tell, so I need to ask it over here...
Just some little details have been disturbing me for quite some time, per example, what exactly EACH battle group represent in the campaign map? A division, regiment, brigade? Considering the size of the force pool, I don't find it realistic at all
Second, why is that the whole battle group disband once I lose a battle? I mean how can a single skirmish between 150 men really affect a whole division and force then to disband? Why can't they just send reinforcements?
Third, the whole campaign map mechanics confuse me, what is the objective of the whole campaign? To annihilate the enemy? To cut them out of supplies? Or each side has different objectives like CC2?
I think the key answer to your questions lie with the core intent of the game, that is to simulate close combat fighting at a multi-squad level. In order to maintain sufficient playability the maps and forcepools had to be maintained at a semi-managable level. Make the maps and forces too big and you lose considerable control and subsequently hamper the playability.
The BG's represent a portion of a Regiment and Brigade and each battle represents a portion of the action that may take place in a sector. Looking at any map, it never represents ALL the land in a given area. Carantan map, for example, is only a portion of the city but the fights we engage there are representative of the battle as a whole for that sector. The results of these battles dictate the fate of the Regiment/Brigade as a whole.
In terms of reinforcements, hold a VL (victory location) at battles end and you'll get to field another 15 units to continue the fight. Speaking from an h2h standpoint, most (but not all) people play with a standard of 15min battles with morale turned off. This maintains sufficient balance to allow for reinforements in the event of a compromised position.
Regarding the campaign/operations strategic map, this brings a strategic layer to the game. The objective is to hold more victory points than your opponent by campaign/operation end. Each map is worth so many points based upon the values assigned to each VL. Access to key VL's will dictate control of maps, exits and supply routes, all impacting the strategic decisions of the campaign/operation as a whole.
Hopefully this answers some of you questions. Come and join us on Gamespy for some h2h action. That's where the true education begins.

In August of 2004, Zappi, Homba, Bambam887, RedScorpion and MOOXE all pitched
in to create this Close Combat site. I would to thank all the people who have visited
and found this site to thier liking. I hope you had time to check out some
of the great Close Combat mods and our forums. I'd also like to thank
all the members of our volunteer staff that have helped over
the years, and all our users that contributed to this site!
