Hi!
This is tutorial "How to run CC4 without CD" . I original wrote this for Aetius (CC4 Kreta project).
1. First You must get Hex Editor (I use WinHEX, but it's not freeware). Now find in CC4.exe offsets '2EAF6' and '2EB87' and change in both values '75' at 'EB':
2. Now go to windows registry (Start -> Run -> Type "regedit") and find this value:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Strategic Simulations Inc.\Close Combat\4.00]
"InstalledFrom"="X:"
(X is a letter of driver from CC4 is installed)
change "X:" at "."
3. Last step is the easiest one::
a) Copy "Videos" folder from CC4 CD to DATA folder in installed CC4
or
b) Turn "enable Vidoes" off in CC4 ingame options and create empty "Videos" folder in DATA folder.
That's all
BTW You can create videos similiar to screen apperent before battle in CC5 (meeting engage, amercian attack etc.). For example create videos with only one image, but showing in 5sec. Of course this can by also problem because a lot of people have problem with indeo codecs.
Good luck!

Anyone know which CC5.exe offsets to edit to make it "no-CD"?
I forgot to use the no-CD exe when we started BoS45.
Is it possible to edit the current custom BoS45 exe without starting from scratch (replacing it with the no-CD exe and editing the changes all over again)?

squadleader_id, I did a file comparison between the patched 5.01 exe and the no-cd exe.
5.01 offset 2F503 hex 75
5.01 offset 2F504 hex 04
no-cd offset 2F503 hex 90
no-cd offset 2F504 hex 90
If this works for you, maybe post your results in the CCV forum so it doesn't fall through the cracks............pardon the pun.

Thanks, yukongold!
I will try it out ASAP and post the result at the CCIII forum...I mean CCV forum
Did you manually search through the exe or did you use a file compare software? What's the recommended freeware file comparer, BTW?

Tried it...............it works!! Yay!
As for the file comparer...did you use the compare tool of something like Hex Workshop? I think you should post your finding at the Modding Workshop forum, my friend!
Not all CC5 mods use the no-CD cracked exe...so this could be very useful info.
Thanks again!

I'm glad that worked for you. Rebuilding your exe from scratch would have been an onerous task.
The only freeware hex editor I know of that has a file compare feature (there may be more) is HxD.
The compare feature is pretty basic but, hey, its free.

StasiuxX's instructions do not apply to the North American version. The offsets do not exist, what changes need to be made?
Yukongold, thanks for the program recommendation of HxD (Hex and Disk Editor).

Why not just use the CC No-CD download
|
Thanks Schreck..........but were's the one for CCIV?
I think the main purpose of this exercise was for modders who have made extensive exe changes but hadn't used a no-cd exe to start with. But its also good for the new folks to try some hex editing. The old school modders are disappearing into the blue and soon there won't be anyone around to help out.

Yes, that's all there is to it Digs. And don't forget to create a "VIDEOS" folder in your CCIV Data Folder. If you have videos disabled you won't need the .avi files. For the registry edit just follow StasiuX's instuctions.........change the "installed from" entry from drive letter and colon to just a period.
StasiuX means "to" when he writes "at"............I wish my Polish was as good as his English.

The help is much appreciated!, I love the fact that I no longer have to use the CD's to run CC4 & 5. I have many games that require the CD (I'm sure many do) and it's a hassle needing to switch between them all the time. They can also stay in good condition, which is a big plus for sure!.

This tutorial "How to run Close Combat 4 without the CD". Was originally written for Aetius' CC4 (Kreta Project).
Step 1: Using an Hex Editor, open the cc4 executable file (cc4.exe) and find offsets '2EAF6' and '2EB87' and change both values of '75' to 'EB'.
Step 2: Open the Windows Registry Editor... (Start\run\regedit) or (Windows Key + R type regedit, then hit enter).
Look in: HKLM\Software\Strategic Simulations Inc.\Close Combat\4.00 and select "InstalledFrom=X:" and modify it.
Change the "X:" to a period ("X:" being your CD-ROM drive letter, that CC4 was installed from).
Step 3: You have one of two choices...
a) Copy the "VIDEOS" folder from the CC4 CD, to the "DATA" folder in your CC4 directory, on the hard drive.
b) Uncheck "enable videos" within the in-game options and create an empty "VIDEOS" folder within the "DATA" folder.
