Atomic itself intends to return to the series, Tamte promises, although its current project is unrelated. "In the future, we definitely plan on making Close Combat games again, refreshed with brand new technology," he notes.

Hmm...so who's going to develop CC6 and beyond? Simtek/S3T or will Atomic take over after they've completed their current project? |

I am sure Atomic will take over. With a 75person team developing thier own engine there would not need S3T except for input. We shall see. |

I'm pretty sceptical about it. Let's remember that Atomic Games was making "new" CC games, but in practice it was all CC3 -zoomin +Command & Conquer-style gimmicks. |

Most games series (like the CC series) only feature minor enhancements and engine upgrades...even new games of today are like that.
But I doubt that Atomic is gonna use the original 10-15 year old CC engine for future CC releases |

Will Atomic release a "Finished" game , will they support a game they release.
Their pedigree in these two areas is not strong. |

Hi guys,
I read the press release and the interview, and I went to the site, but I could not find any thing that mentioned re-working the original games or expanding or maybe even fixing the original game engine. I guessed I missed it somehow.
The 75 man team is obviously being funded by the VC's probably to create the 3d engine for the consoles, and perhaps the first title. Who knows after that.
Personally, I would like them to provide some budget, to at least fix-up and sell the older titles as well, but as the interview stated, console games out sell PC games 10 x 1.
Also, their timing couldn't be worse of course. Regarding S3T, they could probably add them into the team if they want. Well at least one of them, if they intended on doing something with the older games.
It looks like they are headed into 3D shooter land to me. |

The Close Combat Legacy
As for the company's rich history: "It amazes me -- there's still a very vibrant Atomic community out there," Tamte muses.
Much of that community is centered around the acclaimed and influential Close Combat series of real-time tactical wargames.
"The last commercial Close Combat game shipped many years ago, but still there's a community out there," says Tamte, adding that he hopes the company can reengage with those longtime fans.
Currently, the series licensed to wargame-oriented publisher Matrix Games, which still releases new content for the existing games and updates their engines.
But Atomic itself intends to return to the series, Tamte promises, although its current project is unrelated. "In the future, we definitely plan on making Close Combat games again, refreshed with brand new technology," he notes.

Your a bit biased on this topic though, working for the current team who has the cotnracts...
HOWEVER.. didnt Atomic sello off the rights to the CC name and engine? Wouldnt the Atomic have to buy it back?
Once CC5 remake is done Destineer wont have to get paid from Matrix (Strat 3) any nmore as per agreement they had, and Matrix would finally be able to make a better profic margin with new CC products. Consider we dont even know if 1000 units of WAR even sold, we dont know if its been a success or failure for Matrix.. unless it wasnt success or hit thier expectations, Matrix wouldnt walk away from it while they soon get the whole pie? |

We do know that Wacht am Rhein has sold better than previous re-releases, and that Matrix were happy with the sales of the previous re-releases. Maybe there *is* a market for grognard simulations after all!

The credits do say "Licensed from Atomic". That indicates they did not sell it. |

yes, indeed, but they should be produced by either real grognards or real professionals (better both).

They have all the Close Combat games for sale at their site, which tends to support your statement. First to Fight is not there, which is encouraging.
Maybe they will continue developing the game as we know it; rather than slapping the "Close Combat" title onto some other game.

Completely agree.

I see one Close Combat community: CCS, CSO, CCJ, Ryan's, Matrix, definitely the guys who focus on CC II, maybe also Squad Assault. I just hope Atomic are not about to flex commercial muscle and
things.
If that happened we would be left with Wacht am Rhein as the pinnacle of the series. |

Isn't FtF developed by Destineer Games (after they acquired Atomic)?
That might explain why the new Atomic left out FtF on their 'resume'...but they clearly listed CoI, CCMT and CCWAR to their roster of "our games". |

How long do you think it would take 75 programmers to solder one of the V for Victory series onto Close Combat in place of the stratmap?! |
