This is one of my favorite movies. If its playing on the History Channel I'll watch it anytime (like Braveheart). I can't remember many other Nick Nolte movies but in The Thin Red Line he does an amazing and unforgettable performance. He was so intense on the field.
If you like this type of movie, half war half emotion/psychosomething then you will probably like The Tree Of Life, its done by the same director and aparantly the same style of filming. I haven't seen it yet but I will as soon as I can...

today i acquired a dvd called "Assembly".
"makes letters from iwo jima look like a postcard" (total film magazine)
A weathered witness of war's insatiable appetite, Gu Zidi, Captain of the Ninth Company, will struggle his entire life to return honor to his forty six men and their self-sacrifice.
The year 1948 witnessed the launching of the Huaihai Campaign during the Chinese Civil War.
In one of Chinese history's deadliest battles, thousands from the People's Liberation Army (PLA) and the Nationalist Army (KMT) fell in the battle that took place between Xuzhou and Bengdu.
It was amid this bloody fight that Captain Gu Zidi led the Ninth Company infantry unit on a sniper mission.
His orders were to fight the KMT Army until the retreat assembly call was sounded....
highly recommended.
10 out of 10.
check out what IMDb say about it http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0881200/
