PostPosted: Tue Sep 04, 2012 6:20 pm Post subject: Need help with installation. I've spent hours already. Reply with quote

My old Acer netbook that I used to play CC5 on broke down at last, so I had to buy a new laptop. It's a Toshiba Satellite L745 that has Windows 7. I have to reinstall and set up CC5 all over again, of course, mods and all.

I quickly found out that it wouldn't be a simple matter of just transferring the files from the old laptop's hard drive (which I was able to save). Very well, I have to go through the whole installation process again. Since I wasn't sure if I could just use the files from the old hard drive, I had to torrent a copy of CC5. Before you castigate me for that, my old CC5 CD is missing, and it is almost impossible to purchase Close Combat in the Philippines. I've tried.

I still haven't been able to get it to work. One of the problems (I'm not sure if it's the only problem or not) is that this laptop has two Program Files folders - "Program Files" and "Program Files (x86)". Which one should I install in? That's the question.

Even after successfully installing, when I try to run the game it says that the CD is required. There is no CD, of course. Funny thing is, the CD image .iso file, when mounted on Daemon Tools, is supposed to be able to stand in for a CD, yet it doesn't. IIRC, the CCV patch is supposed to allow it to play without a CD, yet it doesn't. I think the issue of whether to install the game in Program Files or Program Files (x86) may have something to do with it.

The torrent also came with an "Install Fix". I can't quite remember what this does, so I might have made a mistake here too. Where is it supposed to unzip into anyway?

Please help. Honestly, it shouldn't have to be this difficult.

Also, there is a "no CD" version of the executable that came with the torrent, yet that one doesn't work either, because apparently, when I run it, it says "cannot find directory: Videos. Please reinstall Close Combat." It says this even when I already copied the "Videos" folder from the .iso file to the "SSI" folder in Program Files. This is getting rather tiresome...

Hey Lonerebel,

CC5 should be installed in the "Program Files" folder, as opposed to "Program Files (x86)"  . A search on this forum for this subject will show more detailed instructions I am sure.
Then, there is the no cd crack, probably downloadable from the downloadsection although I have never used it myself, except for mods.

Yeah, I reinstalled it in Program Files. I was finally able to get it to work by pressing "Browse" when it asks for the CD. Strange that it can't detect the CD on its own...

Now I have to transfer all the maps and plug-ins from the old hard drive. I ran into another problem here because apparently, two or more of my mods use different versions of the same map that are not compatible. I think it's the 1946 mod, which has some maps (such as Gavrus, etc) which for some reason are not compatible with the original Gavrus from GJS. I'm trying to figure out what to do here.

My main problem now is that in gameplay, animation is glitchy. As soldiers and vehicles move across the map, the sprites start to glitch out and/or disappear. Actually anything that moves in the game, from units to the UI to issuing orders to simply scrolling the screen, will cause graphics to glitch, leave afterimages of themselves, or whatever. It can really hinder gameplay, especially in an intense battle.

I've already tried changing the compatibility to the suggested (Windows XP Service Pack 2), hoping that would improve things. It didn't. What else can I do? It seems strange to have an old game perform worse, rather than better, after upgrading to a more powerful laptop.
