St Nazaire also housed the only(i think) dock on the Atlantic coast big enough to take the Tirpitz. The commando raid in '42 consisted over 600 men in various motor launches plus the old destroyer HMS Cambeltown, with the aim of putting this dock out of use. The Cambeltown was rammed into the lock gates of the dock, whilst the commando teams were set down in and around the port to cause as much destruction as possible, then try to get away.
In the morning the net was well and truly down on the area and only 5 of the commandos got back to England, after a long walk to Spain.
Apparently somewhat ammused at the attempt to damage the dock many Germans were sightseeing on the Campbeltown the morning after the raid when it detonated, it's hull having been filled with explosives.
The dock was well and truly done over. It was not until two years after the war that it was repaired. Coincidence or not, the Tirpitz didn't leave its Norwegian fjord.
Around 160 men were killed. Five Victoria Crosses were awarded along with a massive host of other gallantry awards.
In August of 2004, Zappi, Homba, Bambam887, RedScorpion and MOOXE all pitched
in to create this Close Combat site. I would to thank all the people who have visited
and found this site to thier liking. I hope you had time to check out some
of the great Close Combat mods and our forums. I'd also like to thank
all the members of our volunteer staff that have helped over
the years, and all our users that contributed to this site!
