I think engine noise should be more than simply a cosmetic aspect. Your troops should be able to detect whereabouts of moving vehicles when they are close enough to them, even if they don't have LOS on them. A text such as this on the feedback screen would suffice: "Rifle Team: Enemy vehicle heard in the viscinity!" And when you click this, it takes you to this rifle team and you know there is some vehicle coming nearby.

Check out the firefight video showing tanks. CC had 15 years to introduce them, and now Sean O'Connor is picking up their fumble and running the other way.
