If a person has a router then they need to open ports in order for information too pass back and forth between computers. A router firewall a.k.a. hardware firewall, blocks these ports to protect your computer from Hackers, Viruses and Worms.
The ports you need to open are usually in the games readme.txt file. Read your routers manual to find out how to forward these ports with routers software.

Tip: Dont use multiple firewalls! your routers firewall is sufficent enough. There's no need to have a software and hardware firewall combination. This will just lead too conflict, so disable that Windows Firewall or any others.
