Player's News: Close Combat Wacht Am Rhein Details
Posted on Thu Sep 11, 2008 9:05 am by webmaster
Wacht Am Rhein

Information started to flow out steadily for a few weeks last July about Wacht Am Rhein. With a number of screenshots and details posted here, along with Wargamer's recent preview its time to check out in detail everything we know that's new. There are many updates, most of it you can`t see from first glance, but get into the inner workings of it and you can see a ton of changes. In no particular order heres whats new...

  • The Grand Campaign data is now exported to a text file. This file can be manipulated in notepad or any other text editor. The scenario editor does not have an option to change these new settings. Some of the settings you can change via the text file for either side are...
      - Weather
      - Chance of spotting enemy Bgs on strategic map.
      - Three types of support. How many per day, which days, which support.
      - Turns per day 1-4.
      - Date reinforcements arrive.
      - Redirection chance of an Allied BG.
      - Date for supply drops.

  • There are now 64 maps in the Grand Campaign, which is a total of 21 new maps. The 43 originals are still in the game and some have most likely been retouched. This new number brings a new and much larger strategic map. Whether or not the connections shown on this map are correct is unknown, if not shown on the in game strategic map it can make for some frustrating planning. Having a look at the original strategic map, connection are very clearly shown.
  • WaR Strategic Map Original CC4 Strategic Map
  • In the forcepool selection screen, points are now visible. You and your opponent can agree on a maximum number of points to use. This honour system does not apply vs the AI. Also shown here is an open forcepool. Forcepools can now be open or locked. Locked meaning you play with what the computer allocates you just like regular CC4. You will notice the attlegroup attributes have replaced the commanders mugshot. Charisma is the only useful attribute to be aware of, aggressiveness, caution and tactics are instructions for the AI. (link for explanation)
  • Locked Forcepool
  • Disbanded battlegroups have the option to retreat to a friendly map if routed or be disbanded. If they are disbanded there is an option to have them return the following day like in CC5 or to be gone for good. If morale is off, a battlegroup will not be given the option to retreat, it will have no choice but to be disbanded. With morale on, we will see battlegroups retreating, but only if there is a friendly unoccupied map to enter. These settings are probably editable.
  • In the battle debrief screen the total number of Victory Points secured is shown as well as cohesion.
  • The maximum days a campaign can last has not changed from 25 but you have up to four turns per day now. That's a maximum of 100 turns per campaign with an absolute maximum of 3200 individual games, equaling around 800hours of playing time at 15mins per game. The screenshot on the right shows a small dial indicating which turn of the day it is.
  • Heavy artillery can be allocated to any map, there is no more minimum range to deal with, either side.
  • In the Wargamer`s preview it states the weather will affect the tactical gameplay. This is not a new feature. In regular CC4 weather has always affected supply drops and support options. Weather effects can be edited via the text file though.
  • There is an updated manual to be included by RD_Knights-X.
  • Data for units, vehicles, soldiers and weapons is extracted from a text file, you can edit this with notepad, similar to how CC:MT and CoI data works.
  • Cohesion and Victory Location Points
    Four turns per day
  • New graphics for vehicles, weapons, wrecks, aircraft and units.
  • Changes have been made to make editing the strategic map easier.
  • User interface graphics updated. You cannot view the interface at anything higher than 800x600. Attempting to go higher will make your interface smaller with a black border surrounding it.

When Close Combat Wacht Am Rhein hits the virtual shelves players should immidietly notice the biggest changes which are the strategic map, retreat options, campaigns editable, data & strategic map editing made easier and turns per day. The actual gameplay will be the same as Bulge or Normandy. Will it be worth the price Matrix is going attach to it, which will most likely be between 39.99 and 59.99? For the campaigners out there, it should be, being able to edit all aspects will create some highly customized games. For online play, if history is any sort of indication to the future, there wont be much. BattleHQ will most likely be the "supported" arena of play, it is untested in Gamespy so far. As soon as it comes out, or soon afte atleastr CCS should be publishing a more comprehensive list of the changes and enhancements WaR has to offer.

In August of 2004, Zappi, Homba, Bambam887, RedScorpion and MOOXE all pitched
in to create this Close Combat site. I would to thank all the people who have visited and
found this site to thier liking. I hope you had time to check out some of the great Close Combat
mods and our forums. I'd also like to thank all the members of our volunteer staff that have
helped over the years, and all our users that contributed to this site!
