Close Combat 5 Invasion Normandy Release date: December 05 (for the anniversary of the battle)
Planned 37-40 maps, 15 are finished.

The idea for the mod came for talking with AA_Brian about lesser known, smaller battles that would incorporate the whole battlefield in the maps. His first suggestion was to look up the battle of Ortona, which I did and I liked it. The battlefield goes from Moro River to Ortona which is only 6-8km and the width is about 10km. The operation is part of colossal crack operation imagined by Montgomery. The goal of the operation is to gain the hold of the main road that leads to Rome, and in doing so, reach Rome before the Americans. First step of the plan is crossing several rivers, and gaining hold of the main road, and historic coastal Town of Ortona.

The battle for Ortona started with Crossing the Moro River in December '43, 1st Canadian Infantry Division, with support from 1st Canadian Armor Division crossed the river with main objective being the Ortona-Orsogna Hwy some 5 km away. On the German side 90th Panzer Grenadier Division is given a task of slowing down Allied advance, infliction casualties while fighting retreating battle.

Battle was very intense but persistence from Canadians, and German many failed counter attacks, forced the German side to concede the Moro river to Canadians. Germans withdrew to the next defensive line called the Gully, Deep narrow ravine that stretched across the entire battlefield. Canadians were not aware of the existence of the Gully and this surprise defensive line, coupled with inadequate attack strategy brought many casualty to Canadian side. During this time 1st German Parachute Division reinforced the fast depleting 90th Panzer Grenadier.

After many attacks the Gully was breached and Paratroopers withdrew and setup the defenses in and on the right flank the City of Ortona. Even though the City was attacked with only two Canadian Regiments, and defended with Battalion of German Paratroopers the intensity of the battle was never experienced by Allied side. After 7 days of the bitter battle the Germans, who lost control of most of the City of Ortona, withdrew to fight another day including the Monte Casino operation.

My idea for this mod is to have highly adaptive teams, as did happen historically, since the battlefield required special attack strategy for breaching/defending Moro river, the Gully, and Ortona.

Even though both sides had a large number of tanks in the area, their usefulness was limited to main roads since the countryside, covered in mud, was not a friendly territory for steel beasts. In the City of Ortona only two main were left for Tanks to use, that meant that most of the city saw bitter hand to hand fight. All this promises a good Close Combat, which is attraction of the CC series in the first place.

I can tell by how close all the houses are that a fight in Ortona will be pretty bloody. Are there going to be flamer teams available? Pioneer teams with dynomite charges? The streets look pretty narrow to which would mean tanks wont have much use as it was historically in this city.
